Correlation between Tests of Running Repeated Sprint Ability and Anaerobic Capacity by Wingate Cycling in Multi-Sprint Sports Athletes

( Abdul Rashid Aziz ),( Teh Kong Chuan ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2004 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.16 No.1

The 30 s Wingate cycling (cWG) test is a popular test of anaerobic capacity. The test is highly correlated with short, high-intensity performance but may have limitations when assessing intermittent-type activities. A reliable field-based test, the running Repeated Sprint Ability (rRSA) test, is deemed more sport-specific than cWG in determining anaerobic performance of multi-sprint sports athletes. This study examines the relationship of the performance indices of cWG and rRSA (8×40 m with 30 s rest in-between) tests in well-trained multi-sprint sports athletes. Twenty-six National-level male field hockey and soccer players took the cWG and rRSA tests on separate occasions in random order. There were only modest correlations between the cWGs mean power (relative) and rRSAs total sprinting time (r = -.46, p < .05) and between the two tests fatigue indicators (r = .46, p < .05). The findings of the low-shared variance among the performance variables between the two tests provided limited support for the use of the cWG for assessing the anaerobic performance capability of well-trained multi-sprint sport athletes.

Trade Competitiveness and Employment: Job Creation or Job Destruction

Abdul Rashid,Muhammad Akram 한국국제경제학회 2017 International Economic Journal Vol.31 No.2

This paper empirically examines the impact of fluctuations in international trade competitiveness on employment in the UK manufacturing sector over the period 1999–2010. We find statistically significant but economically small effects of a shock to international trade competitiveness on the level of employment. Our results show that the adjustment process in employment mainly works through job creation. We also find that compared to large firms, small firms contribute more toward job creation than job destruction. Our results that changes in GDP growth rate and average wages are significantly related to employment suggest that the UK labour market significantly responds to market forces. Finally, we find that the effect of changes in the real exchange rate on both job creation and job destruction differs between exporting and non-exporting firms.

      • Study Protocol for the Most Effective Recall Method in a Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Klang, Malaysia

Rashid, Rima Marhayu Abdul,Dahlui, Maznah Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Malaysian women with an ASR of 17.9 and a mortality rate of 5.6 per 100,000 population in 2008 (GLOBOCAN, 2008). The 5 year prevalence was estimated to be 14.5 per 100,000 population. As the second most common cancer affecting productive females, cervical cancer imposes an impact to the socioeconomic aspect of the country. However, the poor uptake of cervical cancer screening is a major problem in detecting early pre-cancerous lesions and thus, delay in initiating treatment for cervical cancer. Realizing the urgency to increase the uptake of PAP smear, besides enhancing the promotion of PAP smear screening for women above 35 years old, the call-recall system for pap smear screening had been piloted in one of the suburban districts which aimed to improve regular participation of women for cervical and breast cancer screening. This is of public health importance as identifying the best feasible option to increase patient's respond to participate in the screening program effectively in our setting will be helpful in implementing an organized regular population based screening program tailored to our setting. The pilot program of cervical cancer screening in Klang was an opportunity to assess different options in recalling patients for a repeat pap smear to increase their participation and adherence to the program. Methods and Results: This was a population based randomized control trial. Women aged 20-65 years in the population that matched the inclusion and exclusion criteria were re-called for a repeat smear. There are four different intervention groups; letter, registered letters, short messages services (SMS) and phone calls where 250 subjects were recruited into each group. Samples were generated randomly from the same population in Klang into four different groups. The first group received a recall letter for a repeat smear similar to the one that has been given during the first invitation. The intervention groups were either be given a registered letter, an SMS or a phone call to re-call them. The socio-demographic data of the patients who came for uptake were collected for further analysis. All the groups were followed up after 8 weeks to assess their compliance to the recall. Conclusions: The study will provide recommendations about the most effective methods for recall in a population based pap smear screening program on two outcomes: i) patients response; ii) uptake for repeat pap smear.

Effect of Thirty Days Supplementation of Standardized Lingzhi Extract on Aerobic, Anaerobic and Strength Parameters in Trained Athletes

( Abdul Rashid AZIZ ),( Patrick O. L. GOH ),( Kong Chuan TEH ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2006 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.18 No.1

The mushroom fungus lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used for centuries as a traditional health tonic in the Far East. One of its reputed effects, albeit still unproven, is the ability to improve human physical performance. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential ergogenic effects of thirty days of standardized lingzhi extract supplementation on exercise performance. The study adopted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled experimental design. Nineteen players from the men`s national field-hockey team were randomly divided into the experimental (LIN, n = 10) and control (CON, n = 9) groups. All players completed tests for percentage body fat, maximal oxygen uptake, 30 s anaerobic Wingate cycling, and hand-grip strength, at pre- and post-thirty days of supplementation. Throughout the 30 days, the LIN group consumed 440 mg lingzhi extract (dose equivalent to 1.5 g dry fruiting body) daily while the CON group was given an equivalent placebo. All players underwent a similar centralized training programme during the intervention period. There were no significant differences in the physical and performance parameters between the two groups, either at the pre-and post-supplementation stages. In conclusion, chronic daily supplementation days of 440 mg lingzhi extract for thirty-days did not enhance training related gains in the aerobic, anaerobic and strength parameters in well-trained field-hockey players.

      • A Broadband Microstrip Array Antenna for 3G Smart Antenna System Testbed

Rashid, Zainol Abidin Abdul,Islam, Mohammad Tariqul,Jiunn, Ng Kok Korea Institute of Information and Telecommunicati 2006 정보통신설비학회논문지 Vol.5 No.1

A compact and broadband $4\times1$ array antenna was developed for 3G smart antenna system testbed. The $4\times1$ uniform linear away antenna was designed to operate at 1.885 to 2.2GHz with a total bandwidth of 315MHz. The array elements were based on the novel broadband L-probe fed inverted hybrid E-H (LIEH) shaped microstrip patch, which offers 22% size reduction to the conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. For steering the antenna beam, a commercial variable attenuator (KAT1D04SA002), a variable phase shifter (KPH350SC00) with four units each, and the corporate 4-ways Wilkinson power divider which was fabricated in-house were integrated to form the beamforming feed network. The developed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 17.32% $(VSWR\leq1.5)$, 21.78% $(VSWR\leq2)$ with respect to center frequency 2.02GHz and with an achievable gain of 11.9dBi. The design antenna offer a broadband, compact and mobile solution for a 3G smart antenna testbed to fully characterized the IMT-2000 radio specifications and system performances.

      • Implementation and Performance Evaluation of TMSC6711 DSP-based Digital Beamformer

Rashid, Zainol Abidin Abdul,Islam, Mohammad Tariqul,Chang Sheng , Liew Korea Institute of Information and Telecommunicati 2006 정보통신설비학회논문지 Vol.5 No.1

This paper discusses the implementation and performance evaluation of a DSP-based digital beamformer using the Texas Instrument TMSC6711 DSP processor for smart antenna applications. Two adaptive beamforming algorithms which served as the brain for the beamformer, the Normalized Least-Mean-Square (NLMS) and the Constant Modulus Algorithms (CMA) were embedded into the processor and evaluated. Result shows that the NLMS-based digital beamformer outperforms the CMA-based digital beamformer: 1)For NLMS algorithm, the antenna steers to the direction of the desired user even at low iteration value and the suppression level towards the interferer increases as the number of iteration increase. For CMA algorithm, the beam radiation pattern slowly steers to the desired user as the number of iteration increased, but at arate slower than NLMS algorithm and the sidelobe level is shown to increases as the number of iteration increase. 2) The NLMS algorithm has faster convergence than CMA algorithm and the error convergence for CMA algorithm sometimes is subject to misadjustment.

Acute oral toxicity and bioavailability of uranium and thorium in contaminated soil

Rashid Nur Shahidah Abdul,엄우용,Ijang Ibrahim,Khoo Kok Siong,SINGH BHUPENDRA KUMAR,Mahzan Nurul Syiffa,Fadzil Syazwani Mohd,Rodzi Nur Syamimi Diyana,Nasir Aina Shafinas Mohamad 한국원자력학회 2023 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.55 No.4

A robust approach was conducted to determining the absolute oral bioavailable (fab) fractions of 238U and 232Th in rats exposed to contaminated soil along with their hematotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The soil sample is the International Atomic Energy Agency-312 (IAEA-312) certified reference material, whereas blood, bones, and kidneys of in vivo female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats estimate 238U- and 232Th-fab fractions post-exposure. We predict the bioavailable concentration (Cab) and fab values of 238U and 232Th after acute soil ingestion. The blood 238U (0.750%) and 232Th (0.028%) reach their maximum fab values after 48 h. The 238U (fab: 0.169–0.652%) accumulates mostly in the kidney, whereas the 232Th (fab: 0.004–0.021%) accumulates primarily in the bone. Additionally, 238U is more bioavailable than 232Th. Post 48 h acute ingestion demonstrates noticeable histopathological and hematological alterations, implying that intake of 238U in co-contaminated soil can lead to erythrocytes and proximal tubules damage, whereas, 232Th intake can harm erythrocytes. Our study provides new directions for future research into the health implications of acute oral exposures to 238U and 232Th in co-contaminated soils. The findings offer significant insight into the utilization of in vivo SD rat testing to estimate 238U and 232Th bioavailability and toxicity in exposure assessment.

      • 2004 and 2008 General Elections in Malaysia: Towards a Multicultural, Biparty Political System?

Abdul Rashid Moten 서울대학교행정대학원 2009 Asian Journal of Political Science Vol.17 No.2

The Barisan Nasional (BN), which won a landslide victory in 2004, was returned topower in the 2008 elections with reduced majority and the loss of five state assemblies. Dissatisfied with unfulfilled promises, the electorate protested by voting for a strongopposition. BN was additionally characterized by factionalism. Three major oppositionparties joined hands on a platform of multiculturalism and, using alternative media, unexpectedly, won 82 seats in the parliament. A strong responsible opposition bodes wellfor multiculturalism and Malaysian democracy.
