Studies on the Paramagnetic Impurity $Y_2BaCuO_5$ in Superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ Phase

Conventional ceramic method has been used to prepare the green phase, $Y_2BaCuO_5$, commonly observed in 90-K superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_P{7-{\delta}}$as an impurity phase. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that $Y_2BaCuO_5$ has an orthorhombic symmetry with lattice parameter of a = 12.2 $\AA$, b = 5.61 $\AA$, and c = 7.14 $\AA.$ The average g-value 2.13 observed in ESR spectrum is attributable to Cu2+ stabilized in $C_{4v}$ field. From the magnetic susceptibility ($\mu$eff = 2.29 BM) and the ESR measurements, it is confirmed that Cu(II) $3d^9$ electrons in $Y_2BaCuO_5$ are localized and can be characterized by Curie-Weiss behavior. Optical reflectance spectrum shows a broad absorption peak around 680 nm due to dxy ${\rightarrow}$ $dx^2-y^2$ eletronic transition.

This study sought to reduce damage to grape seedling flower buds - during their dormant period and their sap transfer period - due to covering materials and electric heating elements. In the lowtemperature environment control system, the warmth-keeping difference was found to be higher in order of rice straw+non-woven fabric > non-woven fabric > rice straw > non-covering, and the temperature dropping delay effect was the best in the double covering of rice straw+non-woven fabric, but in the 12-hour treatment, there was nearly no difference in warmth keeping by covering material. In the flower bud damage during the dormant period, ‘campbell early’ and ‘MBA’ were similar and ‘Kyoho’ was high, and damage severity was lower in order of non-covering > rice straw > non-woven fabric > rice straw+non-woven fabric. With the rice straw+non-woven fabric, flower bud damage was caused beginning with the low-temperature treatment of -20oC and 6 hours, thus having high warmth effects. In the 10oC low-temperature treatment during the sap transfer period, flower bud damage was similar with the dormant period, and there was no difference between varieties of grapes. At the sap transfer period`s low temperatures with dormancy eliminated, flower bud damage was greater. With the electric heating element+non-woven fabric, at the .5oC and 3-hour treatment, the daytime internal temperature of .4.8oC was maintained at the dormant period`s 20oC, and .4.3oC was maintained at the sap transfer period`s - 10oC, giving the fabric a good cold prevention effect.
