The energy consumption to cope with heating load in residential buildings is generally depend on the management status, set value of various operating conditions and its control methods such as supply temperature and flow rate of the supply water and resulting return water temperature and so on. Field tests were carried out in this study with user-side heating systems at two residential building complexes in the region of district heating area. As results various physical properties with several operation status were obtained such as supply and return temperatures and flow rates of hot water for heating, electric power consumptions of hot water circulation pumps, pressures and differences between supply and return pipe systems and so on. It was also estimated that over 10% of energy could be saved. Rational operating conditions and efficient control methods should be prepared for more energy saving in residential buildings.

Major energy savings can be made by simply enabling pumps to run at variable speeds over 30% in some cases. The heart of the energy saving principle of variable speed pumps is the basic hydrodynamic law that the power consumed by centrifugal pumps varies as the cube of impeller speed. But, heating water circulation pumps installed before year 2000 in the district heating system in Korea were adopted the CVF(Constant Volume Flowrate) control method over 10,000 units according to the data of KDHC. The main goal of this study was to estimate the effect for the VVF(Variable Volume Flowrate) control method of heating water circulation pumps by using the real measuring data(flowrate, differential pressure, etc.) and the performance characteristic curve of a variable speed pump. As the results, it was assumed that the total pumping electric power was saved up to over 43.5% by VVF control method in a apartment complex in Korea.
