The charcoal is known to have gas adsorption capability and is used frequently to mitigate the unpleasant smells from food and clothing. It is also used to treat water to remove dissolved organic and inorganic substances. In this paper, we applied the several different kinds of charcoals to the papers in three different ways to investigate if charcoal application method affects its gas adsorption capability. Wet end addition, making multiply, and coating method were tested. Specific ethylene gas adsorption capabilities were measured. Experimental results shows that manufacturing conditions of the charcoal itself changed its gas adsorption properties. The boxes used for agricultural produces, and the packaging paper for flowers are to be well fitted application for the charcoal added paper. Mulch paper, which needs opacity and air permeability with proper strength properties, is another candidate for the application of charcoal added paper.

In this study, the optimal welding condition of the input power was selected experimentally through the ERW simulator, which is equal to welding status of ERW part in pipe. This condition is the input power 250㎾ in the heat treatment of the 900℃ normalizing derived from the nondestructive technique and impact energy. In order to evaluate the variation of the fatigue life in the pipe, fatigue surface crack growth test of base and optimal welded metal were performed statistically. As stress intensity factor range (△K<SUB>s</SUB>) increases, the fatigue crack propagation rate (da/aN) of the base metal is faster than that of the welded joint. The variation of the fatigue life in the ERW pipe was estimated statistically using Monte-Carlo simulation with the standard deviation of material constants (C and m) of the paris law in the specimen.

The increase of wet web solid content in wet pressing will save drying energy greatly. We applied wood flours as spacers to increase the old corrugated container (OCC) solid contents in wet pressing. The mixed furnish of OCC and wood flours of 3-5% (wt/wt) increased bulk and drainage rate, and by increasing wet pressing pressure, its solid content started to be higher than 100% OCC furnish at more than 50% solid content level. Addition of cationic starch and drainage aid to the mixed furnish increased solid content further up to around 2%. Cationic starch addition compensated or exceeded the loss of tensile and compressive strength caused by the addition of wood flour, but drainage aid did not. Cationic starch also improved the stretch of the OCC, which could mitigate cracking at folding in boxboard.

In-situ CaCO₃ formation on recycled wood pulp was studied to improve optical property and filler attachment to the fiber furnish in papermaking. We tried to attach calcium oxide (CaO) to the recycled fibers, old newspaper (ONP) in this case, by using selected polymers before in-situ CaCO₃ formation reaction on fibers, and then, CO₂ was injected to the furnish until all the CaO on fiber surfaces was consumed. It was found that the attachment of newly formed CaCO₃ to recycled fibers became stronger by attaching CaO to the fibers before in-situ CaCO₃ formation reaction. It was expected that the polymers used for the attachment of calcium source to the fiber furnishes helped to keep the newly formed CaCO₃ strongly attached to the fiber surface as well as to retain the impurities associated with calcium source and recycled fibers, if any. In-situ CaCO₃ formation gave higher brightness and much less ERIC value in ONP sheet than the case when the equivalent amount of GCC was added to the furnish.
In-situ 탄산칼슘을 표면에 형성시킨 목분의 인쇄용지 적용가능성 연구

Wood flours can give high bulk and high stiffness in paper, but low brightness and low smoothness may prevent them from wide utilization in printing paper. Hydrogen peroxide bleaching and in-situ calcium carbonate formation on wood flours were compared in this study to find out the possibility of using either of them in printing paper. The results showed that the in-situ calcium carbonate formation method on wood flours had better possibility than bleaching method in respects of better smoothness and higher brightness in paper properties. Much higher yield and no water contamination were the economical advantage of using the in-situ CaCO₃ process on wood flours.
