This survey was carried out to investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies to Neospora caninum in Korean indigenous cattle that was raised in central area province Gyeongnam, Korea. A total of 719 sera were tested for N. caninum antibodies using ELISA (Herdcheck anti-Neospora, IDEXX Laboratories Inc., Westbrook, Maine USA). Seroprevalence of individual and farm were 29.8%(214/719) and 53.2%(50/94). Regional seropositive rates of the samples were 61%(47/77), 23.3%(7/30), 13.8%(49/355), 37.6%(77/205), 65.4%(34/52) at Changwon, Jinhae, Gimhae, Miryang, Yangsan, respectively. It showed difference at the age and on the herd size of farms. A herd of cattle above the age of 5 was more infective than under 4 years. And in seroprevalence by herd size farms having under 30 heads was top(35.7%). Seropositive 214 herds of N. caninum antibidies were tested for brucellosis by test tube. Positive rate of double infection was 16.4%(35/214).

Porcine proliferative enteritis (PPE) is a transmissible gastroenteric disease caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. Clinically, PPE causes hemorrhagic diarrhea and sometimes death in growing pigs, but when the disease progresses to a chronic phase, the infected pig no longer displays significant symptoms. The purpose of the present studies were carried out to determine L. intracellularis in the pig farms and slaughter house, in Gyeongnam area. A survey of proliferative enteritis in pig was conducted using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing method, total 1,495 samples. PCR products showed a specific band at the 210bp, 329bp in the specimens of feces and mucosal scraping. Of 420 fecal specimens, 113 (26.9%) were identified as positive to PPE. Of 1,075 mucosal scraping specimens, 109 (10.1%) were identified as positive to PPE. Of total 1,495 specimens, 222 (14.8%) were identified as positive to PPE.

A direct, accurate and sensitive chromatographic analytical method for quantitative determination of four fluoroquinolones(norfloxacin, cirprofloxacin, danofloxacin and enrofloxacin) in chicken, pork and beef edible muscle is proposed in the present study. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of enrofloxacin, as the main component of commercially available veterinary drugs. The samples were homogenized and the antimicrobials were added, then they were extracted twice with dichloromethane. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics were separated on an agilent 250×4㎜, C18, 5㎛, analytical column, at 25℃. The mobile phase consisted of a mixture of DW:acetonitrile:triethylamine(80:19:1%, v/v, pH 3.0) leading to retention times less than 14min. at a flow rate 0.5㎖/min. These fluoroquinolones were detected by liquid chromatography with fluorescence at 290㎚ excitation and 465㎚ emission. The limits of quantification in each edible muscle(chicken, pork, and beef) were 0.32-6.54ng/g. Using 0.5g of each sample, average recovery rates at fortification levels of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2㎍/㎖ ranged 70.14-71.71% for NFX, 71.87-73.89% for CFX, 82.16-92.35% for DFX, and 90.13-98.12 for EFX. This is a simple and economic method to quantify the presence of NFX, CFX, EFX and DFX in edible muscle of animal origin.

This study was conducted to evaluate the alleviative effects of activated charcoal (AC) and Houttuynia cordata (HC) singly or in combination in broiler chickens during aflatoxicosis. Activated charcoal (1% or 0.5%) and H. cordata (1% or 0.5%) were mixed into the diets for the ability to reduced the deleterious effects of 2.4mg total aflatoxin (AFB1) kg-1 diet on growing broiler chickens from 1 to 21 days of age. A total of 160 1-day-old (Hyline Variety Brown) broiler chicks were housed in eight treatment groups [Control, AFB1, AC 1%, HC 1%, AFB1 plus AC 1% plus HC 1%, AFB1 plus AC 1% plus HC 0.5%, AFB1 plus AC 0.5% plus HC 1%, AFB1 plus AC 0.5% plus HC 0.5%] each consisting of 20 chicks. Compared to control, 2.4mg AFB1 alone treatment group significantly decreased body weight gains of chickens. The addition of mixed AC 1% and HC 1% including 6, 7 groups to the 2.4mg AFB1-containing diet moderately reduced the adverse effects of AFB1 on performances of chickens. The chickens consuming 2.4mg AFB1 plus AC 0.5% and HC 0.5%-containing diet showed very slightly reduced the adverse effects on investigated parameters compared to the AFB1 only treated group. Also, the single addition of AC or HC to the AFB1-free diet had no adverse effects in chickens. These results suggest that AC and HC mixed can reduced the aflatoxicosis in broilers and may be contribute to a solution of the aflatoxicosis problem in poultry production.

This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of Salmonella spp. from pigs and cattle in slaughterhouse, the antimicrobial resistance pattern and the prevalence of resistance genes of isolates. A total of 640 fecal samples from pigs and cattle in slaughterhouse were collected for isolation of Salmonella spp.. Isolation rate was revealed as 15% in pigs and 1.6% in cattle. As result of serotyping, group B (56.6%) were identified as most common in pigs and cattle isolates, in order of group C (24.5%) and group E (15.1%). S. Typhimurium (50.9%) was most common serotype. The major serotypes were in order of S. Rissen and S. London (11.3%) and S. Riggil (7.6%). In antimicrobial test, all isolates were demonstrates susceptibility to nitrofurantoin. But isolates were revealed resistance other antibiotics in order of tetracycline (64.6%), streptomycin (68.3%), ampicillin and amoxicillin (56.3%) and spectinomycin (47.9%). With polymerase chain reaction, antimicrobial resistance gene strA (75.0%) and aadA1 (3.1%) were detected in streptomycin resistance isolates and tetA (94.3%) and tetB (11.3%) gene were detected in tetracycline resistant isolates, but tetG was not detected. Class 1 integron gene was detected in all Salmonella isolates.
