Vol.22 No.3

The purpose of this study was to measure the incidence of head blows and possible concussions in competition Taekwondo after competition rules change. In methods, a prospective cohort study design was used. A total of 206 female high school athletes (age range from 16-18±1) from 43 teams participated in the tournament (Jan 21-24, 2011). Overall 196 matches were recorded by camcorders and analyzed. In results, a total of 161 head blows (101 athletes) occurred during this tournament. The incidence rate was 411 head blows per 1000 athlete-exposures. Possible concussion rate was 202 concussions per 1000 athlete-exposures. The head blows and concussions were frequently involved with axe and roundhouse kicks, closed sparring stance, quarter final match, third round, and absence of a blocking skill of head-blow-recipients. In conclusions, the incidence of head blows and possible concussions is dramatically increased following competition rules change on a head blow. Promoting blocking skill to prevent head blows could decrease concussions in competition Taekwondo. Also, competition rules change on a head blow should be considered.

Vol.22 No.5

The purpose of this study is to investigate the understanding on SHA among Taekwondo(TKD) coaches. In addition, based on findings of this study, we will make suggestions for future educational contents of preventing SHA in TKD. A total of 304(M=249, F=55) coaches with ago over 20 years old were participated in this survey. The survey was conducted by self-administration. The SHA related content of survey was divided into four sub-factors. OVERALL, TKD coaches’ level of understanding on SHA was high(81 out of 100 scores). The means of total scores showed a significant difference between gender(p<.05). These differences were also detected from the factor 2,3 and 4(p<.05). Other independent variables which include age, black belt levels, years of TKD experience, and years of TKD teaching experience showed significant differences on the means of total score(p<.05). However, no significant differences were found between the mean scores of total score and levels of education, areas of residence, and past completion of SHA classes(p>.05). In conclusions, overall TKD coaches seem well understanding on the current SHA concept especially female coaches than their counter part. In order to maximize educational efficacy for preventing SHA among coaches in TKD, differentiated educational programs which depend on gender and age levels are probably needed in the future.<br/>

Vol.24 No.1

The purpose of this study is to measure recognizing the frequency of concussions and to analyse potential risk factors for concussion after snowboard-related concussion safety education during snowboarding classes. Cohort prospective design was used. A total of 208 university students (F=72;M=136) participated in this research. The intervention on snowboard-related safety education was implemented for 30 minutes at the first day of snowboarding classes begin. The demographic data, knowledge of concussion before/after the Intervention, and concussion data were collected via a self-report form. The frequency of concussions and factors associated with injuries were analysed by Chi-square test. In results, 17 concussions per 100 S-E occurred during 3 nights/4 days snowboarding classes. Also, the frequency of concussions and multiple concussions were high in females than males and there was a significant difference between gender(p<.05). In conclusions, the frequency of concussions in overall and in females were high during snowboarding classes in 08/09 season. To reduce the risk of concussion frequency, more practices on appropriate falling techniques and balance training are alternative options and especially recommended for females.

Vol.26 No.1

The purposes of this study are to evaluate the frequency of overuse injuries and to calculate the prevalence of overuse chronic injuries in Taekwondo Breaking-Maneuver-competitors. In methods, a total of 230 male athletes (age range from 18-56) participated in the competition (Dec 03, 2011). Among these competitors, 205 athletes were participated in this study. A simple check-off form was used for the injury report. Additionally, a standardized open-ended interview by telephone was performed post competition in 10days. In results, a total of 94 overuse chronic injuries reported. Overall prevalence rate of chronic injury was 41%(CI: 0.34-0.47). The overuse injury rate showed significant differences in BMI, training frequency, and past injury history(p?.05) via x2-test. In conclusions, the prevalence rate of overuse injury was relatively high in Taekwondo Breaking- Maneuver-competitors. To reduce and prevent the object-breaking-technique related overuse chronic injuries, understanding on the signs and symptoms of overuses injuries by athlete him or herself and coaches is necessary. Also, the government organization of Taekwondo should be considered providing education programs related this issue. In addition, continuous research on this topic are needed.
