This study devised and tested a histological staging system for gonadal development in the trumpet shell, Charonia sauliae, which was collected along the south coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. This paper details for the first time the gonadal development characteristics of C. sauliae. Ovary and testis development in C. sauliae can be roughly divided into five stages: growing, mature, spent, degenerative, and resting. The trumpet shelll has multiple fecundation and fertilization during the spawning season for out-of-step gonadal development in high-temperature and low-salinity environments. Female trumpet shell tended to have larger shells and were more abundant than males (64.26% of all animals collected were female).
Influence of Water Temperature and Salinity on Sand Ejection of Manila Clam, Ruditapes philippinarum
강경호,김재민,김영훈,Kang, Kyoung-Ho,Kim, Jae-Min,Kim, Young-Hun 한국패류학회 2005 The Korean Journal of Malacology Vol.21 No.1
In this study, the influence of water temperature and salinity on sand ejection of Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, was investigated. The result showed that, under different water temperature, the highest quantity of sand ejection was at $20^{\circ}C$, the value of which was 0.091 g, while the smallest one was only 0.058 g at 0$^{\circ}C$. The highest releasing rate, 95.79%, could be seen in $20^{\circ}C$ group, while $0^{\circ}C$ group was the lowest one, 85.29%. Under different salinity, 30 psu group had the highest value, 0.057 g, and 0 psu (freshwater) group was the lowest one, only 0.026 g. At the same time, the highest releasing rate appeared at 25 psu, which was 90%. 0 psu group was the lowest one in releasing rate, 60.47%. According to these results, we recommend that the clams should be placed into the clear seawater with about 25 psu of salinity at near $20^{\circ}C$ to let the clams perform the self-depuration. Better quality of clams containing less impurity in the aquaculture and commerce could be obtained from this pre-treatment.

The trumpet shell Charonia sauliae is an endangered and valuable species with potential for aquaculture. For artificial propagation of C. sauliae, the effects of three different food microalgae on the development, growth, and survival rate of the larvae and spat were investigated. For the larval feeding experiments, we utilized six microalgae species as food sources, namely Pavlova lutheri, Tetraselmis suecica, Nannochloris oculata, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum; for the larval and spat growth and survival experiments, we utilized T. suecica, C. calcitrans, and P. tricornutum. The results showed that the temporal digestion index (TDI) for the veliger larvae was significantly different for C. sauliae fed the different microalgae species (p < 0.05), that the T. suecica, C. calcitrans, and P. tricornutum cultivars were better suited for larval consumption (p < 0.05), and that the growth and survival of the larvae and spat were significantly influenced by food type, specifically P. tricornutum (p < 0.05). Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of other microalgae species, different algal concentrations, and biochemical composition on the growth and survival of C. sauliae.

LAVA-ERVC experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of insulation design features on the coolability in case of the external reactor vessel cooling (ERVC). All the 4 tests have been performed using Alumina iron thermite melt as a corium simulant. Due to the limited steam venting through the insulation, steam binding occurred inside the annulus in the KSNP case simulation. On the contrary, in the tests which were performed for simulating the APF1400 insulation design, sufficient water ingression and steam venting through the insulation lead to effective cool down of the vessel characterized by nucleate boiling. It could be found from the experimental results that modification of the insulation design allowing sufficient ventilation could increase the positive effects of the external reactor vessel cooling.

Flow analyses using FLUENT 5.4 code were performed to validate the application of the local bidirectional<br/> flow tube in case of water and air flow. In this study, sensitivity studies have been performed to<br/> optimize the design features of the bi-directional flow tube which can be applied for the various experimental<br/> conditions. 2-dimensional axisymmetric steady state flow analyses have been performed. By calculating the<br/> differential pressure at both the front and the rear hole of the flow tube, K values were evaluated. The K<br/> values show good linearity regardless of the tube sizes and the Re numbers in both water and air flow. And<br/> system pressure and water subcooling didn’t affect the K values. Under the elevated pressure of 80bar with<br/> 80K water subcooling, the K value indicates a similar trend with the case of 2bar with 80K water subcooling.

A series of experiments have been performed in a vertical tube of 9.4 ㎜ inner diameter using the Freon, HFC-134a as working fluid medium under the supercritical pressure range. Two kinds of experiments, i.e. steady-state and pressure transient, have been carried out. As for the steady-state heat transfer experiment, the mass flux was in the range between 600 and 2000 ㎏/㎡s and the maximum heat flux was 160 ㎾/㎡. The selected pressures were 4.1, 4.3 and 4.5 ㎫ which correspond to 1.01, 1.06 and 1.11 times the critical pressure, respectively. In the pressure transient experiments, the inlet pressures were varied from 3.8 to 4.5 ㎫ and vice versa in the pressure transient simulations. In this study, heat transfer correlation and criterion for the heat transfer deterioration are suggested under the supercritical pressures. And also heat transfer characteristics during the pressure transient are examined.

In order to obtain the basic for the effective seed production in scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, rearing experiments of the scallop larvae and spat were studied under the laboratory conditions. As feed of scallop larvae and spat, yellow-brown flagellate, Chaetoceros simples var. calcitrans, one of excellent food organisms was cultured under continuous illumination with 3000 lux and 20±1℃. In 7 hours after fertilization, the first cleavage was initiated and Trochophore larvae appeared after 24 hours. About 0.7% of the D-shaped larvae survival into the attachment spat.

Integral effect tests using the ATLAS facility were performed to investigate the blowdown load behavior during a feedwater line break accident of a steam generator. As a sensitivity study, the break opening time and the break area were varied in the tests. After the break of the feedwater line, propagation of the pressure wave along the distance from the break location inside the steam generator was clearly and pertinently observed in all the tests. As the break opening time became shorter and the broken area became larger, the dynamic pressures were measured to be significant values in the tests. Based on the present experimental data, an analysis was performed using the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic system code, MARS 3.1 with an aim of qualitatively validating the test results and also evaluating the blowdown load prediction capability of the best-estimate system code in the simulation of steam generator feedwater line break. Calculation results on overall trends of the dynamic pressure behavior were comparable with the test results which indicated a feasibility of dynamic load prediction using the MARS code.
