Bae, Kihwan,Seo, Wonjun,Kwon, Taeho,Baek, Soohyun,Lee, Shinwoong,Jin, Kapduck 영남대학교 약품개발연구소 1993 영남대학교 약품개발연구소 연구업적집 Vol.3 No.-
The methanolic extract of Commelina communis (aerial part) showed antibacterial activity against a cariogenic bacterium, Streptococcus mutans OMZ 176. The active principles were identified to be β-carboline alkaloids. l-carbomethoxy-β-carboline, norharman and harman, which were bactericidal in the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 100 μg/ml against the strain.

A combination of magnolol or honokiol with lysozyme isolated from the egg white of the Korean Ogol fowl(Korean natural monument No. 265) exhibited synergistic effect of bactericidal activity against a typical cariogenic bacterium, Streptococcus mutans OMZ 176. The synergistic ratio increased with time dependence.
Screening of Leaves of Higher Plants for Antibacterial Action
Bae, Kihwan,Byun, Jaehwa 충남대학교 약학대학 의약품개발연구소 1987 藥學論文集 Vol.3 No.-
The methanol and benzene extracts of the leaves of 55 higher plants in Korea were tested for their antibacterial activity against three Gram positive bacteria, Streptcoccus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, and one Gram negative bacterium Escherichia coli. Among them, the methanol extract of the leaves of Liriodendron tulipifera showed remarkably potent antibacterial activity against both Gram positive and negative vacteria.

A Cytotoxin Component from Angelicae Koreanae Radix against L1210 and HL-60 Cells
Bae, KiHwan,Ji, JongMyung,Kang, JongSeong,Ahn, ByungZun 충남대학교 약학대학 의약품개발연구소 1994 藥學論文集 Vol.10 No.-
A cytotoxic sesquiterpene against L1210 and HL-60 cells was isolated from Angelicae Koreanae Radix (buk-kang-hwal). The component was identified as bisabolangelone by means of chemical and physical methods. The ED_50 values of it were 1.20 ㎍/㎖ against L1210 cells and 2.30 ㎍/㎖ against HL-60 cells. Bisabolangelone was found in buk-kang-hwal but not in kang-hwal.

The methanol extracts of Magnolia obovata, Liriodendron tulipifera, Reynoutria elliptica, and Commelina communis showed strong inhibiting activity on the growth of Streptococcus mutans OMZ 176 which has been known as a main cariogenic becterium. The fractionaion of the extracts, monitored with the bioassay, resulted in the isolation of the active components. Magnolol and honokiol were isolated from M. obovata, β-liriodenolide from L. tulipifera, emodin from R. elliptica, harman and norharman from C. communis. The chemical structure and activity relationships of the lignans (magnolol and honokiol) and β-carboline alkaloids (harman and norharman) are also discussed.

It was revealed that magnolol and honokiol isolated from the stem bark of Magnolia obovata, had potent antibacterial activity against Bacillus anthracis. A quantitative analytical method of magnolol and honokiol by HPLC has been established, and the amounts of the two components in the dried stem bark of M. obovata were 1.94%, and 0.44%, respectively.
Antimicrobial Activities of Hydroxybiphenyl Derivatives
Bae, Kihwan,Koo, Sunghyen,Seo, Wonjun 충남대학교 약학대학 의약품개발연구소 1985 藥學論文集 Vol.1 No.-
It has been elucidated that magnolol and honokiol, isolated from the stem bart of Magnolia obovata, had potent antibacterial activity against a cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans. They also show a significant antibacterial activity against Bacillus anthracis, which causes malignant pustule and woolsorter disease in human. Some hydroxybiphenyl derivatives are synthesized from starting materials, phenylphenols and biphenols by means of Claisen's Rearrangement and Elb's Method to develop more potent antibacterial chemicals and to investigate the structureactivity relationships. The introduction of allyl groups to the aromatic rings of starting marerials shows the increase of antibacterial activities, but the number and positions of them do not effect their activities. Furthermore, the introduction of hydroxy group to aromatic rings also increases the activity.
