P117 : Rosacea: a clinicopathological study of 278 patients in Korea

Background: Rosacea is characterized by erythema of the central face that has persisted for months or more. There are few reports of the histological findings in rosacea. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the clinical manifestations of rosacea and investigate the histological features. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 278 patients histologically confirmed as rosacea who visited the Department of Dermatology, Catholic medical center from 2008 to 2013. Results: These patients were evaluated with regard to clinical subtypes, severity of the disease, presence of demodecidosis, and histological features. The ratio of males to females was 1: 1.8. The age distribution showed a peak incidence in the fifth decade. National Rosacea Society classified rosacea into 4 subtypes and 1 variant. The most common subtype was papulopustular rosacea (52.9%), followed by erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (34.9%), ocular rosacea(4.0%), and phymatous rosacea (2.9%). Granulomatous rosacea made up 5.3% of rosacea. The majority of rosacea patients revealed moderate symptoms (42.2%). Skin biopsies of 278 patients revealed histological features of granuloma in 47 patients. Demodecidosis was present in 28 patients. Conclusion: In this study, we evaluated the subtypes of rosacea including the granulomatous type through histological examination. Also, other clinical and histological characteristics are discussed.
