        1. This report is the result of investigation for assistant business during my appointment in Insect Section of Kyungbuk Agricultural Technical Station as a dispatcher service regarding to onion maggot, from 1949 to 1950. 2. Species of the maggot distributes over all the part of this country and brings on most serious damages with the lost of about 20 billion Hwan($33,300) per a year to garlics, onions and Chinese onions. 3. Standard Korean name is nominated to "MANURL PARI"(Garlic Fly), by basing on my thought. 4. The maggot appears in Spring and Autumn for 4 or 5 Broods in a year, particulary for the nursay bed of onion in Autumn. The first imago of onion maggot appears during the time of 29 March to 15 April and lives through winter as a pupa, but not imago here in Kyungbuk area of Korea. 5. The imago spawns chiefly into the first leaf-sheath or injured space of these hosts around there. The time of spawning is concentrated at 4 to 6 o'clock in the afternoon, and lenght of the life is running up to 33 days in the female and 34 days in the male. 6. Coloring tendency of the imago body was ordered to change to white, red, violet, yellow, green, black and biue, and these coincide with order of wave-lenght of sunlight. 7. Period of the larval stage requires 17 to 36 days in October and Novermber, 20 days as an averge, 12 to 28 days in April and May, 18 days as an average, 12 to 15 days in June and July, 14 days as an average. 8. Numbers of the larva parasiting in a host plant are 1 to 47 heads but the more plant had been parasited per a stump by 1 to 5 heads of the larva. 9. Period of the egg stage requires 1 to 6 days, 4days as an average and period of the pupal stage requires 12 to 22 days in Summer season, 16 days as an average 161 to 177 days in Winter season, 169 days as an average.

        (1) From 1956 to 1957, writer collected the all around of the Dong whasa, Taegu, Korea. (2) Writer collected 3128 butterflies, and there are six families and seventy species of butterflies. (3) I found, the frequency of increase and decrease of occurrence, generation number, also living density. (4) The number of butterflies and it's species increased rapidly from late April, and Jund was maximum, after decreased slowly, so from the middle of September decreased repidly. (5) In general, the male butterflies occured earlier than female. (6) Also, writer found some of teh charecteristics in species through another places.

        The present paper reports some investigations of the Korean large cicada, Cryptotympana coreana Kato, made during the year of 1956 and 1961. The results were summarized as follows: 1) During the past decade, Korean large cicada has, to a ever-increasing extent, been a pest for apple trees. Damages are chiefly due to the oviposition on twigs and branches, absorption of sap from branch, and at the same time injury of roots caused by larvae. 2) The adult begins to appear from middle July and the peak is observed from late July through early August, but it tends to decrease gradually after that date, and disappear from the end of September. 3) The average number of eggs per oviposited twig are from 158.2±18.08 to 391.2±63.22 according to the orchard's condition. 4) The relation between the number of oviposition wounds and the number of eggs contained per twig is shown as follow: Y=338.71±4.443X (r=0.764^**) Y: number of eggs X: number of oviposition wounds 5) At general apple orchards most of the eggs are laid on one year old twigs but in worse cared orchards they are laid more often on 2-3 years old twigs. 6) The larvae begin to hatch from late June and end middle July, but the peak of hatching was observed on the beginning of July. The eggs of more than 80% hatch in the daytime having it's peak on or around 1 P.M. 7) Twigs having a diameter from 4.880±0.482 to 5.852±0.664 centimeters, that is roughly equivalent to the size of pencil, are most frequently attacked.

        In the previous paper[Lee, 1958] the author pointed out that three species of mite belonging Teranychidae are collected from apple trees in Taegu, southern part of Korea. After that the author could find more another important mites (Bryobia praetiosa, on apple trees. In the present paper an attempt was made to make clear the faunistic composition of these four species in apple orchards, and this paper is the result of study from May to September 1960-1961. The following formula shows the index of finding frequency; number of plots in which the species concerned is present/total number of plots examined×100 Metatetranychus ulmi has the widest distribution: the rate is more than 80.0 almost every period when a research is made. The second widest distribution is of Tertanychus pacificus: the rate is 50.0-66.7 from later part of July to August, but we can find some rate in the middle of May. Tetranychus telarius has the third widest distribution, and this mite was found usually in the orchards where grass is growing. Bryobia praetiosa is the one having the least rate, next table shows these results more clearly. Relative composition of the mite feuna in apple orchard. 표 삽입(원문을 참조 바랍니다.) Bryobia praeriosa can be found during the early period of research, but in the particular poor orchards like one on the hills, we can see frequently serious damages.

      • 엽비의 硏究 Ⅲ : 구로-바응애, Bryobia praetiosa Koch, 의 生態에 關하여 Seasonal Occurence and Bionomics of the Clover mite

        Clover mite, Bryobia praetiosa, is widely distributed on the wild grass such as Clover in southern part of Korea, but at some particular apple orchards we can see frequently serious damages. However, this mite has not been investigated in our country. This paper gives an account of field and laboratory observations on the bionomics and the seasonal occurreuces of this pest on the apple trees at the orchard located near our University. Eggs hibernate on the twigs of apple trees and begin to hatch from the early parts of April. The first adults are found on around the 17th of April and gradually in crease their uumber and the seak ernergence was observed at the beginning or in the middle of June. The nymph showed the peak at the later part of May or in the early June. We can see large peak of egg emergence in the mid part of May in 1960, but in 1961 shows in the middle part of June. 표 삽입(원문을 참조 바랍니다.)

      • 말매미, Cryptotumpana corcana Kato, 에 關한 硏究(Ⅱ) : 幼蟲의 令基數, 各令蟲의 形態的 特徵 및 生活史에 關하여 On the Number of Larval Instars, Morphological Characteristics of Each Instar, and Life History

        1. Cryptotympana coreana kato have damaged the apple and the other fruits orchards seriously, particulary since last 10 years. Adult female deposits her eggs in twigs and soon the twigs are wilting. Larvae suck nutrition from roots in the soil. Furthermore adult sucks trees' sap. From these points, we consider Cryptotympana coreana kato the most important injurious insect in southern part of our country. In the previous time, author reported about the emergence and damage of adult and larvae of the Cryptotympana coreana Kato (1961). Now, author reports about determining the number of instars by measuring the length of Anterior Femur and also reports about life history, growing process and the characteristics of each instar of the larvae. Deatils are as follows 2. Measurement of the length of Anterior Femur on 373 larvae collected at the orchards that are in the vicinity of Taegu city, Korea, on October and November in 1960-1963 clearly indicated the presence of five larval instars (Fig. 2). Author classified each instar according to the morphological characteristics. The result of measurement is indicated in Table 3 and for reference the result of measurement of antenna in each instar is indicated in Table 5. 3. The morphological characteristics of each instar of larvae are illustrated on (Fig. 3-7). 4. The damaged twigs in which eggs had been deposited in 1958 were collected in June, 1959. After the eggs being hatched in the 25℃ incubator, larvae were fed, outdoors, in large sized breeding plots where apple trees had been planted and have been investigated till 1963. Also, in 1960, larvae of 4th and 5th instar were collected at apple orchards and were fed in seperated plots. And the result of these two experiments shows as following. Larvae period in the soil requires 7-8 years. That is, it's duration from egg to adult is 8-9 years. Fig. 4 shows it.

      • 各種 Miticide에 對한 귤응애 Panonychus citri의 感受性에 關하여

        The authors studied on the susceptibility of Citrus red mite to the various miticides collected from two localities; in resistant group and non-resistant group, resistance of Phenkapton and Folidol among the applied miticides were investigated. 1. Difference on the susceptibility of NR group an R group were shown significance. 2. In case of Phenkapton, Folidol and Tedion, the susceptibility were shown the highest differences among the various mitecides. 3. In the LD_50 by Probit treatment of Bliss to Phenkapton and Folidol, the ratio of the resistance R/NR were shown as 22 times in both chemicals. 4. The reasonable control methods and the most suitable chemicals can be selected in the orchards for the control of red mites through the recognition of susceptible degree to the chemicals by the conducted experimentation and its results.

      • 왕담배 나방의 生態에 關한 硏究 : 特히 고추의 被害를 中心으로 Particularly concerning the injuries of red pepper

        Observation were made from 1955 to 1957 on the bionomics of the corn earworm, particulaly concerning injuries of red peppers, and the following results were obtained. (1) It is a known tact that very harmfull pests affect corns, tomatoes, cottons in America and other countries. In korea, however, it is considered to be more injury ious especially to red pepper than to any others. (2) The insect passes the winter as pupa in the ground and takes two generations per year. The first abult moth appears from late in May to the middle of August, but the most prevalent period is in the middle and later parts of June. The second abult moth appears between the early August and early October, but in the middle and later parts of Augutt is the most prevalent period. On the hasten red pepper field the adult are found earlier and more eggs can be found as well as more damages than in ordinry growing field. (3) The egg period lests from 2 to 7 days, and average period is 4.04±0.08 days, almost 88% of the eggs are laid on the top of the leaves of the red pepper plants while the rest of them being placed of the twigs and surfaces of red peppers. More eggs are found on the surface of the leaves than on the back of them. (4) The larval period 13-23 days, but 13-15 days in June, 21 days in July, 22-23 days in August. The larva damages the red pepper from 1.0 to 7.0 ㎝ in length, and from 0.1 to 3.0 ㎝ in width, in the case of Korean native varieties. (5) The pupa stage requires 8-15 day in July and the average period is 14.00±0.08 days, in early of August 8.82±0.06, and late of August 13.25±0.24 days.
