Background: During human skin development, hair follicles dynamically develop to adult hair structures through the hair germ, hair peg and bulbous hair peg. In this perspective, it is thought that the distributions of stem cells changes following the stage of the hair follicle morphogenesis. Objective : The purpose of this study was to observe the distribution of stem cells following the stage of hair follicle morphogenesis. Methods : Skin was obtained from the abdomen skin of 15 human fetuses, ranging from 10 to 23 weeks of gestational age. Immunoperoxidase staining was performed on frozen sections using monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin 19, known as a stem cell marker, and bcl-2, a factor to prevent cells from entering the apoptotic pathway. Results : 1. Cytokeratin 19 was expressed in the periderm, basal cell layer and condenced cells constituting the hair germ and peg. In the early bulbous hair peg stage, it was expressed in the entire outer root sheath cells, the bulge area and basal cells of the hair bulb. In the late bulbous hair peg stage, it was expressed in the bulge area, outer root sheath cells only of inferior portion and some of the germinative cells of the hair bulb. 2. Bcl-2 was expressed in the basal cells intermittently, condenced cells constituting the hair germ and aggregates of dermal mesenchymal cells concentrating along the hair germ. In the hair peg stage, it was expressed in the entire basal cell layer, condenced cells constituting the hair peg and aggregates of dermal mesenchymal cells along the hair peg. In t.he bulbous hair peg stage it was expressed in the basal cells of the infundibulum, sebaceous gland, bulge area, germinative cells of the hair bulb and the dermal papilla cells. Conclusion . From the results obtained, we thought that the distribution of stem cells is dynamically changing following the stages of the hair follicle morphogenesis. It was also speculated that bcl-2 might have an important role in dermoepidermal interactions during hair follicle morphogenesis. (Kor J Dermatol 1997;35(4): 712-719)

We report a case of combined nevus which showed typical histological findings. As far as we know, such a case has not yet been reported in Korean dermatological literature. A 19-year-old female presented with a dome-shaped smooth surfaced, skin colored, 1.3 x 1.0cm sized nodule on the left knee area. A Biopsy specimen showed a well circumscribed, uncapsulated cellular mass on the dermis composed of nevus cells and storiform patterned spindle cells. A part of the mass had fine brown colored jgranules with some pleomorphism and mitotic figures. There was no recurrence during the one year follow-up period after excision. We report a case of syringocystadenoma papilliferum(SCAP) occurring in a 28 year-old male who had a 2cm X 1cm X0.7cm sized papillomatous and cauliflower-like tumor on the left inguinal area without any subjective symptoms. A Histopathological examination revealed cystic invaginations which contained a few well defined papillary projections and proliferation of ductal structures at the periphery. The papillae were covered by columnar epithelial cells on the luminal side with frequent, tufting and piling up, whereas the underlying cells were small cuboidal ones and contained a vascularized stroma and dense lymphoplasma cell infiltration. The majority of ductules contained amorphous eosinophilic material and some showed intraluminal papillation and decapitation secretion. Immunohistochemical studies with S-100 antigen, CEA, and EMA were performed. Studies of S-100 antigen and EMA were nonspecific. CEA was positive in the amorphous intraluminal materials and apical cells of the lumen. The histopathological and immunohistochemical studies revealed rather typical findings of SCAP. Plexiform neurofibroma is considered a pathognomic of Von Recklinghousen's disease, which involves the deep and large nerve trunk. These are large irregular nerve fascicles which result from an increase in endoneural matrix within individual nerve facicles, without an increased number of nerve fibers. We experenced a case of Von Recklinghausen's disease in a 24 year-old male who had variable cutaneous skeletal, and CNS lesions. He presented multiple neurofibromas, cafe-au-lait spots, and axillary freckles as common cutaneous lesions of NF-I and giant pigmentation, sacral hypertrichosis, and plexiform neurofibroma as unusual cutaneous lesions. Also he had a scoliosis, bowing deformity of the humerous and wedging deformity of the body of the 5th cervical spine as a skeletal manifestation and cortical calcification in the occipital area as a CNS manifestation. Pruritic Folliculitis of Pregnancy

Pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy of pregnancy is a specific dermatoses of pregnancy which is characterized by erythematous follicular papules and pustules between the fourth and ninth month of pregnancy. It has usually resolved by 4 weeks of postpartum and has no adverse implications for mother and baby. We report a case of pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy in a 24-year-old primigravida woman who had had monomorphic erythematous follicular papules and pustules on her anterior chest wall and back. Histopathological findings of erythematous papules showed acute folliculitis and perifolliculitis. The skin lesions improved rapidly with 2 weeks of delivery without treatment. Backgroud: Topical irritants disrupt the cutaneous permeability barrier through the removal of stratum comeum lipids. This perturbation of barrier integrity stimulates a variety of homeostatic repair responses that ultimately result in the normalization of bamer function. Object To measure the effect of desoxymethasone ointment, vaseline and hydrobase on the barrier recovery of benzalkonium chloride (BKC) imtated skin Materials and methods . The left flank skin of 2-3 monthold hairless mice was treated with BKC and then desoxymethasone ointment, vaseline and hydrobase were applied. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was checked after 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 hours. Electron microscopic examination was performed after 3 and 24 hours after desoxymethasone, vaseline and hydrobase had been applied. Results : The recovery of TEWL was most prominantly observed in the desoxymethasone ointment treated group followed by vaseline and hydrobase. Electron microscopic examination using ruthenium tetroxide fixation revealed that secretion and numbers of lamellar bodies and complete formatice of lipid bilayers were most prominent at desoxymethasone ointment and vaseline treated group. Conclusion : Desoxymethasone ointment, vaseline and hydrobase can be good agents in improving bamer recovery after exposure to irritant material. (Korean J Dermatol 1998;36(5): 820-826)
