Psychological and Physical Effects of Schroth and Pilates Exercise on Female High School Students with Idiopathic Scoliosis

Vol.28 No.6

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of psychological factors on Schroth exercise and Pilates exercise to female high school students with idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: Sixteen subjects with over 20 of Cobb’s angle were randomly divided into Schroth exercise group (SEG, n=8) and Pilates exercise group (PEG, n=8). Both training programs were carried out 3 day a week for 12 weeks. Psychological factors were measured using depression scale, self esteem scale and body esteem scale. Results: Both groups showed significant differences in depression scale, self esteem scale and body esteem scale. Schroth exercise group showed greater improvement than Pilates group. Conclusion: Having correct body image affects psychological factors to growing students. Schroth exercise is more effective method to physical and psychological approach of idiopathic scoliosis.

The Effects of Pilates Exercise Using the Three Dimensional Schroth Breathing Technique on the Physical Factors of Scoliosis Patients

Vol.30 No.6

Purpose: This study aims to verify the effects of Pilates exercise using the three-dimensional (3D) Schroth breathing technique on scoliosis patients in comparison with the existing Pilates exercise technique, which uses lateral breathing. Methods: The subjects were 16 scoliosis patients who went to S fitness center in Daegu, Korea. They were randomly and equally divided into a Schroth Pilates exercise group (SPEG), who performed Pilates exercise using 3D Schroth breathing, and a Pilates exercise group (PEG) who performed Pilates exercise using lateral breathing. The subjects conducted the Pilates exercise three times per week for 12 weeks. Changes in their Cobb’s angle, angle of trunk rotation, and chest expansion ability were measured before and after the exercise. Results: Both groups experienced significant improvement in their Cobb’s angle, angle of trunk rotation, and chest expansion ability after the exercise (p<0.05). Between-group comparison after the exercise showed that SPEG’s improvement in Cobb’s angle, angle of trunk rotation, and chest expansion ability were more significant than those of the PEG (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study verified that Pilates exercise using 3D Schroth breathing was more effective in improving scoliosis patients’physical condition than existing Pilates exercise. The researcher anticipates that the 3D Schroth breathing technique will be effectively utilized in other diverse intervention exercises besides Pilates exercise.

Vol.24 No.1

Background: This study was conducted to prove the effects of the Schroth exercise on sagittal postural alignment to the visually impaired students. Methods: The subjects were 8 students who attend the special school in Daegu and performed the Schroth exercise 3 times per week for 3 weeks. Craniovertebral angle and pelvic alignment were measured to compare the effects of the exercise. Results: Craniovertebral angle and pelvic alignment on sagittal plane showed significant differences (p<.05). Conclusions: Schroth exercise was effective to improve postural alignment of sagittal plane to the visually impaired students and these results will have a positive impact on future study of improvement of postural alignment on sagittal plane to the visually impaired students.

Vol.14 No.1

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to measure the effects of cervical stabilization exercises on neck pain, forward head posture, and the acoustic characteristics frequency and amplitude modulation of patients with chronic neck pain caused by forward head posture using pressure biofeedback. METHODS: 20 patients with chronic neck pain and voice disorders presenting at the S Exercise Center in Daegu, Korea, were included in the study. A cervical stabilization exercise program of 50 minutes per session was performed three times a week for eight weeks. Pressure biofeedback was utilized to determine the impact of the exercises on neck pain, forward head posture, and the acoustic characteristics of the patients. The measurements were taken prior to and after the intervention to determine any changes. RESULTS: A significant improvement in neck pain, craniovertebral angle and the acoustic characteristics frequency and amplitude modulation of the patients was demonstrated after the intervention (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Cervical stabilization exercises were demonstrated to have a significantly positive effect on neck pain, forward head posture, and vocalization stability in patients with chronic neck pain in the current study based on measurements taken using a pressure biofeedback system. This indicates that an improvement in forward head posture positively impacts postural stability and vocalization. Future studies investigating a greater range of interventions designed to improve neck pain and acoustical effects in patients with chronic neck pain and forward head posture patients are warranted.

A high-sensitivity cfDNA capture enables to detect the BRAF V600E mutation in papillary thyroid carcinoma

2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.2

Although many efforts have been made to investigate a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), the currently available biomarkers lack the sensitivity to accurately characterize PTC. Here, we established a high-sensitivityt cell-free DNA (cfDNA) detection system using polydopamine-silica (PDA/SiO2) hybrids to enable clinically reliable analysis of PTC. The PDA/SiO2-coated beads improved the detection of DNA by 1.76-fold (p=0.031) compared to the conventional silica-based cfDNA capture system. The PDA-SiO2-coated beads were then applied for the detection of cfDNA from serum samples obtained from 37 PTC patients, and the BRAFV600E mutation status in captured DNA was analyzed using both quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and digital droplet PCR (ddPCR). The BRAFV600E mutation status analyzed using both assays demonstrated a strong correlation with the multifocality of PTC, exhibiting area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) of >0.964 (p<0.001). In contrast, none of the serum antigens or antibodies related to PTC or thyroid functions exhibited clinically significant prediction for detecting PTC patients with multifocal tumors. These findings suggest that cfDNA capture using PDA/SiO2-coated beads is a promising approach for analyzing the BRAF mutation, which can serve as an excellent diagnostic biomarker for PTC.
