The Effect of the Exterior R&D Network on the Import Substitution of Small and Medium Venture Firms: The Moderating Impact of Corporate R&D Center

The business environment changing very fast with technology advance and convergence makes the role of R&D become more and more important to firms' success. By analyzing the 683 firm-level data of small and medium venture firms with the ordinary least squares regression, this study sheds new light on the following four points. First, small and medium venture firms' exterior R&D collaboration network heterogeneity positively impacts their import substitution from technology development. Second, the existence of the corporate R&D center moderates the positive impact of small and venture firms' exterior R&D collaboration network heterogeneity on their import substitution from technology development. Third, small and venture firms' exterior R&D information network heterogeneity positively impacts their import substitution from technology development. Fourth, The existence of the corporate R&D center moderates the positive influence of small and venture firms' exterior R&D information network heterogeneity on their import substitution from technology development. 기술 진보 및 융합과 함께 매우 빠르게 변화하는 사업 환경은 기업의 성공에 있어서 연구개발(R&D)의 역할을 더욱 더 중요하게 하고 만들고 있다. 본 연구는 기업 수준의 683개 중소 벤처기업 데이터를 대상으로 최소 자승 회귀분석을 실시하여 다음과 같은 4가지 주요 사항을 새롭게 조명한다. 첫째, 중소 벤처기업의 외부 R&D 협력 네트워크의 다양성은 기술 개발로 인한 수입 대체에 정(+)의 영향을 준다. 둘째, 기업 부설 연구소의 존재는 중소 벤처기업의 외부 R&D 협력 네트워크의 다양성이 기술 개발로 인한 수입 대체에 주는 양(+)의 영향을 조절한다. 셋째, 중소 벤처기업의 외부 R&D 정보 네트워크의 다양성은 기술 개발로 인한 수입 대체에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다. 넷째, 기업 부설 연구소의 존재는 중소 벤처기업의 외부 R&D 정보 네트워크의 다양성이 기술 개발로 인한 수입 대체에 주는 양(+)의 영향을 조절한다.

SMEs' External Technological Information Network Diversity and Sales Growth : The Mediating Impact of the Productivity Improvement and the Moderating Effect of the Technology Development Driven by CEO

본 연구는 중소기업의 외부 기술 정보 네트워크에 대한 연구 흐름의 깊이를 더하기 위해 외부 기술 정보네트워크의 다양성이 중소기업의 기술개발로 인한 매출 증대에 미치는 직접적인 영향 뿐만 아니라, 이러한 직접인 영향에 대한 생산성 향상의 매개 효과와 최고 경영자가 주도하는 기술 개발의 조절 효과를 실증적으로 분석한다. 2,200개의 한국 중소기업 데이터를 사용한 최소자승 회귀분석을 바탕으로 다음과 같은 결과를 본 연구는 제공한다. 첫째, 중소기업의 외부 기술 정보네트워크의 다양성은 기술 개발로 인한 매출 성장에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다. 둘째, 중소기업의 생산성 향상은 외부 기술정보 네트워크의 다양성이 매출 성장에 미치는 이러한 정(+) 영향을 부분 매개한다. 셋째, 최고경영자가 주도하는 기술개발은 중소기업의 외부 기술 정보 네트워크의 다양성이 매출 성장에 미치는 정(+)의 영향을 조절한다. This research empirically analyzes not only the direct impact of the external technological information network diversity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the sales growth from their technology development but also the mediating impact of their productivity improvement and the moderating effect of the technology development driven by CEO on this direct impact in order to deepen the research stream on SMEs' external technological information network. Based on the ordinary least squares regression by using 2,200 data of South Korean SMEs, this study reveals the three findings. First, SMEs' external technological information network diversity positively influences their sales growth from technology development. Second, SMEs' productivity improvement partially mediates this positive influence of the external technological information network diversity. Third, SMEs' technology development driven by CEO moderates the positive influence.

Small and Medium Venture Companies' Exterior Information Network Heterogeneity and New Technology Development Capability: The Mediating Role of Product Planning Capability

기업의 신기술 개발 역량은 기술 융합 및 발전과 함께 빠르게 변화하고 있는 사업 환경의 치열한 경쟁 속에서 성공적인 제품혁신과 프로세스 혁신을 창출하는 데에 필수적이다. 본 연구는 개방형 혁신의 관점에서 외부 정보 네트워크의 다양성이 중소 벤처기업의 신기술 개발 역량에 미치는 직접 효과와 이러한 직접 효과에 미치는 제품 기획 역량의 매개효과에 대한 연구 모형을 개발한다. 683개의 중소 벤처기업 데이터를 사용하여 최소 자승 회귀 분석을 실시한 통계적 연구모형 검증 결과를 통해, 본 연구는 다음과 같은 2가지의 주요 연구 결과를 제공 한다. 첫째, 중소 벤처기업의 외부 정보 네트워크의 다양성은 신기술 개발 역량에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다. 둘째, 중소 벤처기업의 제품 기획 역량은 외부 정보 네트워크의 다양성이 신기술 개발 역량에 미치는 정(+)의 영향을 완전 매개한다. Enterprises' new technology development capability is essential for creating successful product innovation and process innovation in the heavy competition in the business context changing quickly with technology convergence and development. Based on the open innovation perspective, this research develops a research model about the direct effect of small and medium venture companies' exterior information network heterogeneity on their new technology development capability and the mediating impact of their product planning capability on this direct effect. This study statistically tests the research model by using the ordinary least squares regression with the 683 small and medium venture companies, providing two major findings as follows. One finding is that small and medium venture companies' exterior information network heterogeneity positively impacts their new technology development capability. The other finding is that small and medium venture companies' product planning capability perfectly mediates the positive effect of their exterior information network heterogeneity on their new technology development capability.

The Impact of the External Technology R&D Collaboration Network Heterogeneity on the Employment Increase of Small and Medium Companies: The Mediating Effect of Export Growth

본 연구는 한국 중소기업의 수출 증대와 고용 증대에 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 요인들에 대한 연구 흐름의 깊이를 심화시키기 위해 외부 기술 연구개발 협력 네트워크의 다양성이 중소기업의 수출 증대와 고용 증대에 미치는 영향을 연구 모형화 하였으며, 대한민국의 2,200개의 중소기업으로부터 수집된 데이터를 사용하여 연구 모형을 실증적으로 검증 하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 실증 검증 결과를 통해 다음과 같은 2개의 연구 결과를 조명한다. 첫째, 중소기업의 외부 기술 연구개발 협력 네트워크의 다양성은 기술 개발로 인한 고용 증대에 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 미친다. 둘째, 중소기업의 기술 개발로 인한 수출 증대는 기술 개발로 인한 고용 증대가 외부 기술 연구개발 협력 네트워크의 다양성에 의해 받는 양(+)의 영향을 부분 매개한다. With a view to deepening the research stream on the factors positively influencing the export growth and the employment increase of South Korean small and medium companies, this research has developed the research model about the impact of small and medium companies' external technology R&D collaboration network heterogeneity on their export growth and employment increase, and has empirically tested the research model with the 2,200 data collected from the small and medium companies in the South Korea. This study illuminates the two points from the empirical testing results. One point is that small and medium companies' external technology R&D collaboration network heterogeneity significantly and positively influences their employment increase from technology development. The other point is that small and medium companies' export growth from technology R&D partially mediates the impact of the external technology R&D collaboration network heterogeneity on their employment increase from technology R&D.

The Mediating Effects of the Manufacturing Capability and the Testing and Inspection Capability on the Relation between Small and Medium Venture Firms' External Information Network Heterogeneity and Technology Commercialization Capability

This study has attempted to empirically analyze the mediating effects of small and medium venture firms' manufacturing capability and testing and inspection capability on the relation between their external information network heterogeneity and technology commercialization capability with a view to diversifying the research stream on the influential factors to small and medium firms' technology commercialization capability. By performing the ordinary least squares regression analysis, the Sobel test, and the Baron and Kenny test based on the 683 data of South Korean small and medium venture firms with the IBM SPSS version 23, this study provides the three empirical findings to be useful for future studies on the roles of small and medium venture firms' the manufacturing capability and testing and inspection capability. First, small and medium venture firms' manufacturing capability partially mediates the positive effect of their external information network heterogeneity on their technology commercialization capability. Second, their testing and inspection capability partially mediates this positive effect. Third, their manufacturing capability and testing and inspection capability jointly and partially mediates this positive effect. 본 연구는 중소기업의 기술 사업화 역량에 영향을 미치는 요인들에 대한 연구의 흐름을 다양화하기 위해 중소벤처 기업의 제조 역량과 시험 및 검사 역량이 외부 정보 네트워크의 다양성과 기술 사업화 역량 사이의 관계에 미치는 매개 효과를 실증 분석하였다. IBM SPSS 23을 사용하여 한국의 683개 중소벤처기업에 대해 실시한 최소자승 회귀분석, Sobel 검정과 Baron 및 Kenny 검정 결과를 통해 본 연구는 중소기업의 제조 역량과 시험 및 검사 역량의 역할에 대한 후속 연구에 유용한 세 가지 실증 분석 결과를 제공한다. 첫째, 중소벤처기업의 제조 역량은 중소벤처기업의 외부 정보 네트워크의 다양성이 기술 사업화 역량에 미치는 양(+)의 효과를 부분 매개하는 것으로 분석되었다. 둘째, 중소벤처기업의 시험 및 검사 역량은 이러한 양(+)의 효과를 부분 매개하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 셋째, 중소기업의 제조 역량과 시험 및 검사 역량은 이러한 양(+)의 효과를 공동으로 부분 매개하는 것으로 분석되었다.

The Mediating Role of Production Capability Growth Moderated by CEO-led R&D in the Relation between SMEs’ Cooperative R&D Network Heterogeneity and Green Management Performance

본 연구 논문은 중소기업의 협력적 R&D 네트워크의 다양성과 녹색경영 성과 사이의 관계에서 CEO가 주도하는 R&D에 의해 조절되는 생산역량 증가의 매개적 역할을 실증적으로 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 연구는 CEO가 R&D를 주도한 그룹과 CEO가 R&D를 주도하지 않은 두 그룹으로 나누어진 3800개의 한국 중소기업 데이터를 사용하여 최소자승 회귀분석에 기반한 Baron & Kenny 검증 및 Sobel 검증을 실시하였다. 본 연구는 기존 연구들이 보여주지 않은 다음과 같은 두 가지 새로운 분석 결과를 제공한다. 첫째, 중소기업의 생산역량의 증가는 협력적 R&D 네트워크의 다양성과 녹색경영 성과 사이의 관계를 유의하게 매개하는 역할을 한다. 둘째, 이러한 생산역량 증가의 매개적 효과는 CEO가 주도하는 R&D에 의해서 유의하게 조절된다. 이뿐만 아니라, 본 연구는 중소기업의 협력적 R&D 네트워크의 다양성이 녹색경영 성과에 미치는 영향이 CEO가 주도하는 R&D에 의해 유의하게 조절된다는 점을 실증적으로 보여준다. This research paper aims at empirically analyzing the mediating role of production capability growth moderated by CEO-led R&D in the relation between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)’ cooperative R&D network heterogeneity and green management performance. This study performed the Baron & Kenny test and the Sobel test based on the least squares regression analysis by using the 3800 data of South Korean SMEs which were divided into two groups according to either CEO-led R&D group or CEO-not led R&D group. This study provides two new analysis results which prior studies have not revealed. First, SMEs’ production capability growth play a significantly mediating role in the relation between their cooperative R&D Network Heterogeneity and Green Management Performance. Second, this mediating role of production capability growth is significantly moderated by CEO-led R&D. In addition to this, this study empirically reveals that the effect of SMEs’ cooperative R&D network heterogeneity on their green management performance is significantly moderated by CEO-led R&D.

IT SME Ventures’ External Information Network Diversity and Productivity Improvement :

This study empirically analyzes the effect of IT SME ventures’ external information network diversity on their production period reduction and productivity improvement generated from technology development. This research constructs a mediating model based on the open innovation perspective and tests it with the 138 samples of South Korean IT SME ventures based on the ordinary least squares regression. This research is expected to make a good contribution by shedding a new light on the following three points about the critical role of IT SME ventures’ external information network diversity in increasing their production period reduction and productivity improvement generated from technology development which has scarcely been illuminated in the extant studies in the field of the management of technology for SMEs. First, IT SME ventures’ external information network diversity positively influences their production period reduction. Second, the external information network diversity positively influences IT SMEs’ ventures’ productivity improvement. Third, IT SME ventures’ production period reduction partially mediates the influence of IT SME ventures’ external network diversity on their productivity improvement. These three fresh points are expected to provide useful theoretical and practical implications. Related to the theoretical implication, this research provides a fresh implication that IT SME ventures’ external information network diversity positively influences not only their production period reduction but also productivity improvement generated from technology development. Concerning the practical implication, this study suggests that the CEOs in IT SME ventures make strategic efforts to use more diverse external information sources in order to increase their production period reduction and productivity improvement generated from technology development.

중소기업의 외부 기술협력 네트워크의 다양성과 생산성 향상 :

Productivity improvement is one of the important goals which firms’ technology developments aim at. Firms’ improved productivity from technology development means that their inputs can produce more outputs through technology development, which makes firms’ productivity improvement from technology development more and more important in the age of technology advance and convergence like today. This research empirically analyzes the influence of the external technology collaboration network diversity on the productivity improvement of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from technology development and the moderating effect of the chief technology officer (CTO)-driven technology development on this influence. This study constructs the research model reflecting the moderating impact of the CTO-driven technology development and tests it with the ordinary least squares regression through the IBM SPSS version 23 by using the 2,000 data about South Korean SMEs. This research empirically reveals two points. One is that SMEs’ external technology collaboration network diversity has a positive influence on their productivity improvement from technology development. The other is that the positive effect of SMEs’ external technology collaboration network diversity on their productivity improvement from technology development is moderated by the CTO-driven technology development. The two points revealed in this study present two meaningful implications in not only the practical but also academic point of view. The practical implication is that it is effective for SMEs to use CTOs in increasing their productivity improvement from technology development. The academic implication is that making technology collaboration with more diverse external partners can increase SMEs’ productivity improvement from technology development.

As the external knowledge networks of firms have become more and more important to their product and service innovations, many global leading companies such as P & G, IBM, and Samsung Electronics have formulated and implemented their open innovation strategy. This study attempts to empirically analyze the effects of CEOs` supports for external knowledge networks, external knowledge network-oriented cultures and inter-organizational knowledge management systems as the major antecedents to external knowledge networks by using the data based on organizational members` perceptions about them. Based on 847 samples collected from employees in three companies in the medical, the construction and the IT service industries, this study performed a structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis about the effects of the antecedents to the external knowledge networks on product and service innovations through Partial Least Squares (PLS). The empirical findings of this study show that CEOs` supports for external knowledge network positively influence product and service innovations, partially mediated by external knowledge network-oriented cultures and inter-organizational knowledge management systems. And they also show that external knowledge network-oriented cultures and inter-organizational knowledge management systems have a positive effect on product and service innovations, respectively, partially mediated by external knowledge networks. With these new findings, academic and practical implications are discussed.

지식 경영 활동의 혁신 역량으로의 연계 : IT 서비스 산업 중심으로

Given the large investment and prevalence of knowledge management (KM) in organizations, it has become important to analyze the effects of KM activities on organizational performances. A theoretical framework is proposed to investigate the impact of KM activities on innovation capabilities in the IT service industry. This study considers KM activities as the major determinant that enhances absorptive capacity. KM activities enhance employees` ability to obtain external knowledge, resulting in increasing intellectual capital. Thus, this study proposes that absorptive capacity plays a mediating role between KM activities and innovation capability. Additionally, this study investigates the key antecedents of KM activities that promote employees` knowledge sharing. Based on prior studies on KM, this study posits KM team activities and top manager support as KM activities. The proposed research model was tested by using survey data collected from 556 employees in the IT service industry. PLS (partial least squares) was employed for the analysis of the data. The findings of this study showed that KM activities and absorptive capabilities play a significant role in enhancing service innovation and process innovation in the IT service industry. The results also shed light on the mediating role of absorptive capacity between KM activities and innovation capability. Moreover, both KM team activities and top manager support serve as the salient antecedents of promoting employees` knowledge sharing.
