Various parameters are involved in the frictional behavior of steel sheet during stamping. We performed various tests in order to investigate the influence of tool surface texture directionality upon the resulting friction in sheet forming processes. Four different tools were manufactured which gave us a range of roughness for both parallel and transverse texture directions. Each of the tools was examined in flat type friction tests under identical test conditions. The tool with the transverse surface texture produces significantly lower levels of friction than the tool with parallel texture direction. Considering the lubrication mechanism associated with transverse texture, one can imagine the lubricant being constantly supplied from the reservoir of the micro valley to the point of contact and hence producing the lower levels of friction seen.

The quality of the sheared surface affects the stretch flangeability of steel sheet. The quality of sheared surface is influenced by several process factors such as die clearance, shape of cutting edge, use of counter punch, and shear. In this paper, the influence of these shearing process factors on the stretch flangeability of the HSS (DP980) was analyzed through a shearing and a stretch flangeability test. When the die clearance was 10%, the effect of these shearing process factors on the stretch flangeability was the greatest, and the use of an acute angle blade was found to be more advantageous in the stretch flangeability than a right angle blade. It was found that the stretch flangeability was improved when active bending was applied during shearing.

The hole expansion tests using conical punch, flat punch or hemispherical punch are widely used for stretch flangeability verification of HSS. In this study, we investigate the strain distribution on the shear edges of the hole expansion test using grid marking and a projector. A small crack at the edge is distributed, resulting in a large gap between the HER and the crack strain. The strain distribution at the edges is irregular due to anisotropy of sheet metal. While an edge perpendicular to the rolling direction indicate a lower strain level compared to an edge parallel to the rolling direction, edge cracks occur at the edge perpendicular to the rolling direction. To predict the manifestation of edge cracks in FE analysis, the result of the hole expansion test with a crack strain measurement may well be a better tool than FLD. In this case, the level of strain and the direction of the edge relative to the rolling direction should be well considered.

The success of warm forming of Mg alloy sheets is very dependent on its frictional behavior at elevated temperatures. The effects of contact pressure and sliding length on the frictional characteristics of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet were investigated at elevated temperature and at room temperature. The contact pressure range for the friction test was determined through FE analysis of the roof panel which is a candidate for Mg alloy application. According to the experimental results, the frictional behavior of the Mg alloy sheet is equally highly influenced by both sliding length and contact pressure at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, however, the sliding length has a more dominant influence on the frictional characteristics of the Mg alloy sheet than the contact pressure, if the contact pressure is lower than a certain level.
