Vol.12 No.-

        1. The emphasis on Life, Living, and Survival and the quest toward them are usually found in the Chinese religions. In general, religion aims to transcend the reality by emphasizing beyondness. In Chinese religions, the spirit of Life is mentioned in three different ways. First, it is said in relation to man and the way of heaven. Second, it is said in relation to man and nature. Third, it is said in relation to man and other man. In other words, the spirit of Life is mentioned in three different relations: religiously, ecologically, and socially. 2. Life and The way of heaven In the overall picture of Chinese religions, the concept of `Tao` (the way of life) and Life is not sharply separated but closely interrelated, coexisting with each other. 3. Life and Nature According to the traditional Chinese religions, Life is vividly described as a way of following Nature. Nature is the starting point of and the destination of Life. In relation to Life and Nature, Life is described as a natural phenomenon. Life is in the everlasting transmigration and is trying to realize the foreverness in that forever change. In the harmonious and mild Nature, the secrets of life and death reveal its hidden meaning. If we face life and death with tranquility and peace, we can transcend them, reaching the purged stage where we can find truth. The epistemology of Ancient Chinese religions reveals the attitude of preserving and loving Nature, respecting the regulations and orders of Nature. This reflects that those religions have the ecological preference toward Nature and Life. 4. Life and Human Relations The essence of loving and cherishing lives lies in how to establish ideal human relations between human beings. That is, cherishing lives necessarily means not only their preference toward Nature but also their preference toward human relations. What we realize in life by this attitude is said to be a kind of human Tao (the way of life). To reach the way of heaven, we should first learn the human Tao, that is, the way of man`s life. Life means keeping the human Tao as well as the way of heaven. That`s why we should not break the rule of `Tao`. 5. The spirit of Life-loving As we have discussed, we can find Life-loving spirit and attention to Life itself as well as the wisdom of survival in the tradition of Chinese religions. Therefore, it is necessary to reevaluate the spirit of Life as we can find it in the Chinese religions. This is important in that it gives us a lesson to reconsider the essence of religion.
