“자신도 어쩔 수 없는 크리스천에 관한 희극적 소설”인 현명한 피는 신으로부터 도망치기에 실패한 주인공이 기독교적 영웅의 위치를 성취함으로써 아이러니하게도 승리를 거둔다는 줄거리를 다룬다. 착한 사람(진정한 크리스천)을 찾기 어려운 추락한 세상에서, 주인공은 그리스도와 십자가의 고난에 자신을 전부 바침으로써 예시적 영웅의 역할을 한다. 그의 결연한 의지에 의한 죄짓기와 고행의 행위들은 궁극적으로 그를 구원에 이르게 하고, 이를 통하여 가톨릭의 모순과 위안의 교리인 펠릭스 쿨파(행복한 추락)를 구현한다. 주인공의 발자취를 밀착 추적함으로써, 죄와 구원, 그리고 펠릭스 쿨파에 이르는 오코너적 가톨릭 주제가 그녀의 첫 장편소설에서 발아하는 과정을 확인할 수 있다. 본고는 현명한 피의 종교적 읽기를 통하여, 초기작품의 여러 결함에도 불구하고 오코너 문학의 중요한 자리를 차지할 자격이 충분히 있는 작품으로 재조명한다. Wise Blood is “a comic novel about a Christian malgré lui (despite himself),” who ironically achieves a heroic stature by failing triumphantly to run away from God. In a fallen world where a good man (a true Christian) is hard to find, the protagonist plays the role of an exemplary hero in his total commitment to Christ and to the Cross of suffering. His willful acts of sinning and penance ultimately lead him to redemption, thereby enacting the paradoxical and comforting the Catholic doctrine of felix culpa (the fortunate fall). The “single O’Connor story” of “mythic dimensions” is the drama of man’s fall and redemption. By tracing closely the footsteps of the protagonist, we may find the O’Connor theme of Catholicism—sin, redemption, and felix culpa—germinating in her first novel. Therefore, the paper argues that Wise Blood deserves to be a fine specimen in the O’Connor literature for all the defects of the early work.

The World on the Decline: A Teilhardian Reading of “A View of the Woods”

This paper attempts a Teilhardian reading of “A View of the Woods.” Finding Teilhard’s evolutionary ideas to be “stimulating to her imagination,” O’Connor adopted them for the stories collected in Everything that Rises Must Converge. At the heart of Teilhard’s vision there is an evolving world engaged in a constantly rising movement toward the Omega point of a universal convergence. The two key metaphors informing Teilhard’s vision of the evolving world are “rising” and “converging,” which O’Connor twists ironically for this story: “rising” is twisted into declining and “converging” into collision. For a man of “egoism” who refuses to rise and converge with the others in accordance with the universal attraction toward the divine center, the world devolves; it goes on the decline. Such is the tragic case with Mark Fortune, the hubristic protagonist of “A View of the Woods.”

The Pedagogical Journey of the Heads in “The Artificial Nigger”

"The Artificial Nigger" is a story of a pedagogical journey, during which a grandfather plans to teach his grandson the lesson of wisdom and humility. The lesson may be summed up as following: "You ain't as smart as you think you are." The two main characters whose name happens to be Head, reflecting their over-blown head, undergo most excruciating ordeals during the one-day excursion into the city. The purpose of this essay is to determine the outcome of the two Heads' pedagogical journey and to answer the question: what after all have the Heads learned at the end of the journey?My answer is that the pedagogical journey is a total failure. "A character's changing," which O'Connor considered the essential for "all good stories," does not happen here, even though it does not mean that the story is not a good one. All three encounters of the Heads with the Negro do not change their smug self-pride and superior attitude toward the other race. As Mr. Head willfully shuts his eye that has seen his own abject self reflected in the miserably chipped figure of the Artificial Nigger, he denies his common bond with the fallen and suffering humanity. As the journey comes to a full circle, the moon is "restored, to its full splendor." The homecoming of the two Heads is a return to the inviolate sanctuary of self-deception aided by the "dignifying" lunar magic. The story concludes with the younger Head as a voluntary prisoner in his grandfather's narcissistic and reclusive world and the elder Head at all-time high of his pride. The two are reunited with each other in ignorance of their true selves and "true depravity." The pedagogical journey taught them nothing.

롤랑 바르트의 『모드의 체계』에 대한 비판적 수용 : 의미작용의 기호학적 관점을 중심으로

기호학자로서의 롤랑 바르트 Roland Barthes는 페르디낭드 드 소쉬르 F. de Saussure의 영향을 받은 그레마스 A. J. dramas를 만나게 되면서 현대사회를 읽는 분석틀로 구조주의를 알게 되었다. 그는 소쉬르가 기호 과학을 위해 제안하였던 공시적 분석방법을 사용하여 패션, 음식, 가구, 자동차에 이르기까지 기호학의 적용대상을 확장시켰다. 기호표현 속에 공시되어있는 의미작용의 과정을 설명하였던 자신의 기호학 원리의 적용모델로 계획하였던 그의 『모드의 체계』système de la Mode는 언어의 본질 규명을 위하여 언어학을 기호학에 포함시켰던 소쉬르와는 달리 기호학을 다시 언어학에 귀속시키는 의미의 모델로써 모드의 체계를 바라보는 것이다. 이는 그의 형식주의적 텍스트 분석 활동 기간 중에 이루어 것으로써, 저자가 이미 인정하였듯이 존재 방식 혹은 창작 방식이라는 단어 '모르의 체계에 대한 설명으로는 불충분한 것이었다. 모드는 언어체계 내부에서 단어나 구 그리고 이야기와도 같은 언표들의 의미를 연구하는 언어학적인 의미론에 귀속되기보다는 오히려 그가 "저자의 죽음"으로 공언하였던 문화적 코드로써의 글쓰기와 자연으로써의 육체가 상호 침투되는 존재론적인 "텍스트'성에 의해 직조되어지는 무한한 의미 실천(Parole)의 장이며, 의미작용에 의해 어떤 대상화된 주체 혹은 상황을 지시하는 논리적 구조를 갖는다. 본 연구는 언어 연구 상의한 특수 분야를 지칭하는 의미론을 모드의 구조분석에 적용한 롤랑 바르트의 형식주의적인입장에 영향을 끼친 소쉬르의 기호학 일반 명제들을 소개하고, 구조언어학적 의미화 과정의 층위변화에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.

분열형 효모 Schizosaccharomyces pombe에서 자외선 유도유전자 UVI-180의 특성 연구

본 연구는 DNA 상해유도기작을 규명하기 위하여 하등 진핵생물인 분열형 효모 Schizosaccharomycespombe로부터 subtraction hybridization 방법을 이용하여 자외선 유도 유전자인 UVI-180을 분리하고 그유전자 구조와 발현양상을 조사하였다. UVI-180 유전자의 발현양상을 Northern hybridization 방법으로 살펴본 결과 자외선(ultraviolet- 조사 1시간 후에 최대의 발현 증가를 나타내었다. 반면 알킬화제인MMS(methyl methanesulfonate) 처리에 의해서는 전혀 발현이 증가되지 않았다. 이 결 과 UVI-180 유전자는 DNA . 유전자의 기능을 알기 위하여 null-mutant 세포 주를 제조하여 그 특성을 살펴본 결과 이 유전자는 세포의 성장에 필수적인 유전자임을 알수 있었다.

논문초록본 논문은 필자가 미국 위스콘신 대학에서 오년여의 기간 동안 담당하였던 영작문 강의의 경험에 기초한 것으로써, 특히 영작문 강의 교수와 이공계 학생들 사이에 엄연히 존재하는 오해와 갈등의 요소들을 해소하여 보다 생산적이며 창의적인 글쓰기 학습의 방향을 모색하고자 한다. 객관적이며 경험론적인 가치 기준에 길들여진 과학도들에게 주관적 창의성이 강조되는 수사학의 방법론을 이해시키고 그들이 작가로서의 자신을 인정하고 스스로를 재조명할 수있도록 유도하는 일이 영작문 교수가 처한 가장 커다란 과제이며 급선무일 것이다. 이를 위해 이공계 학생들이 본능적으로 느끼는 공포, 즉 글쓰기가 과학의 객관적 사실들을 희생하지않고도 행해질 수 있는 인간적이며 창조적인 작업이라는 것을 인식시키며, 동시에 작문 교수가 갖는 과학 분야에 대한 스스로의 무지함에서 오는 두려움을 극복하여 상반된 학문에 대한 배려와 이해의 폭을 넓혀야할 것이다. 이러한 교수와 학생 사이의 심리적 갈등과 분열의 해소는 작문 강의실 내에 만연해 있는 냉전의 분위기를 종식시킬 것이며, 비로서 학생은 작가로서 교수는 그들의 글을 읽고 감상하며 평가하는 독자로서의 기본적 위치를 확립하여, 과학과 수사학이란 상반된 두 분야가 평화롭게 공존하는 강의실에서 생산적이며 창의적인 글쓰기 교육이 이루어질 수 있을 것이다.
