`섬김`(디아코니아: diakonia)의 개념은 원래 그리스말에서 유래한 단어이다. 동사형에서`시중을 들다`는 의미이다. 그것은 식탁에서 손님에게 시중드는 섬김의 일을 말하며, 어떤 일에 걱정하며, 어떤 사람들을 돕는 일을 뜻하는 말로 사용되었다. 특히 고대사회에서 신분이 낮은 사람(종)이 신분이 높은 사람(주인)에게 시중을 드는 일, 또는 피지배자가 지배자의 시중을 드는 일 등을 가리키는 말로 사용되었다. 그리고 이 말은 삶의 여러 영역에서 도움을 필요로 하는 자에게 도움을 베푸는 인간적인 행위를 가리키는 말로도 사용되었다. 그리고 섬김은 역시`디아코네인`(diakoneni)` 섬긴다`,` 봉사한다`라는 동사형에서 파생하여 두 개의 명사형`디아코니아`(diakonia)와 `디아코노스`(diakonoj)로 발전하게 된다. `디아코노스`는 시중드는 사람을 가리키며, 섬기는 자로 불릴 수 있다. 그리고`디아코니아`(diakonia)는 여성 명사로서 우리말에서 섬김, 봉사 그 자체를 뜻하는 말로 이해된다. 이러한 섬김이 단순한 도움이나 구제가 아니라 사람을 변화시켜 하나님의 영광을 위해 살게 하는데 진정한 목적이 있다. 이 사역을 위하여 성경적 상담을 현장에 적용하고 그것으로 참 치유가 일어나게 해야 한다. What is Diakonia Ministry? The definition of `service(διακονια)` is originally derived from a Greek word which means `attend to one`s wants` in verbal form. It means to serve customers at dinner table, to concern some matters, and to help certain people. Especially the term is used when a lower-class person serves upper-class person, or a subordinate attends to a conqueror. And the term is also used to describe a humane behavior that is granted to needy people. The word `service(diakonia)` is derived from `diakonein`, which means `serve` or `volunteer` in verbal form, and it is developed into two norms which are `diakonia` and `diakonoj`. The word `diakonoj` means a servant or a person who serves. And `diakonia` is understood as `service` or `voluntary work`itself as a female norm. Diakonis ministry has been an important work of churches since Christianity has been spread. Missionaries thought service ministry is very important to reduce cultural shock and to spread the gospel. Missionaries established social community centers such as hospitals, schools, orphanages and elderly centers. In those days, medical facilities were not enough to care patients and the movements of enlightenment have begun. The service ministry conducted by missionaries had good impacts with these backgrounds. These ministries reduced strict attitudes and rejecting minds, they practically contributed to the improvements of cultures and the society. After these, Christianity has conducted main roles of social welfare ministries. Eventually, the social service ministry of Korean Christianity did so important works to spread the gospel in the peninsula. Diakonia ministry is one of the practice of Biblical counseling. Because Diakonia and Biblical Counseling also have same propose. This is proclaim of Gospel and Change of man.
