Shrinkage of polymer mortar made with UP resin is generally high dozing setting. The authors have noticed the fact that additive expanded polystyrene(EPS) based resin melted in styrene monomer can reduce the shrinkage in polymeric structures of UP mortars. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of added EPS-based resin on the basic pies of UP mortar. Research is carried out to determine the basic properties as a function of melting EPS-based resin content in styrene monomer(EPS/SM), and total polystyrene resin to UP resin (PS/UP). And it is tested for viscosity of EPS-based resin, slump-flow test, working life, compressive and flexural strengths, and curing shrinkage test. From the test results, viscosity of resin for polymer mortar increases with increasing EPS-based resin content. Curing shrinkage of UP mortar is considerably smaller than that of plain UP mortar, nevertheless, reduction in the strengths is nat recognized according to adding of EPS resin. We can make UP mortar that has a low shrinkage and high strengths.

Polystyrene mortars using EPS solution-based binders are prepared by various EPS concentrations of EPS solutions and cross linking agent contents, subjected to a dry curing and a dry/heat curing, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths. As a result, irrespective of curing conditions, the flexural and compressive strengths of the polystyrene mortars are increased with increasing EPS concentration of EPS solutions and cross linking agent content except for an EPS concentration of 40%.

The setting shrinkage behavior in polyester mortars with two-phase shrinkage reducing agent(SRA) was observed at the ambient temperature. Polyester mortars were prepared with various styrene contents and two-phase shrinkage reducing agent(SRA) contents. The length change and exotherm temperature of polyester mortars were continuously monitored by a noncontact-type automatic length change measuring apparatus and a thermocouple embedded respectively. Low-shrinkage or non-shrinkage of polyester mortars should be accomplished by adjusting styrene content and SRA content.
