이 글은 교양교육에 대한 인식의 편차를 확인하고, 실용적 글쓰기를 중심으로 교양교육에 대한 개편 과정에 개입하는 요인들 간에 형성되는 역학관계를 정리하고자 하였다. 이 논의는 교육 전통이 오래지 않고, 교육기관으로서의 기반을 구축해가는 지방 사립대, 특히 원주 한라대학교를 중심으로 하였다. 지방 사립대의 경우 교양교육의 교육적, 인적, 물적 토대를 형성하는데 있어서, 담론화된 요소들이 각각의 논리와 운동성을 가지고 개입하게 되는데, 표면적으로 이들 간의 관계는 일차원적 대립으로 보이지만, 실제적으로는 상호 견제를 통한 다차원적 상호관계를 유지하고 있음을 확인해 보고자 한다. 원주 한라대학교의 경우, 대학교육 내 전공교육과 교양교육의 관계, 교양교육에 관한 대학구성원들의 인식의 편차, 심화되는 대학경쟁에서의 생존, 취업을 비롯한 사회진출을 우선시 하는 사회적 풍토 등을 비롯하여 교양교과의 개발, 운영 등의 문제를 해결하기 위한 매개 개념으로 실용, 실용적 글쓰기를 선택하였다. 일반적으로 실용, 실용적 글쓰기는 학문, 학문적 글쓰기와 대립되는 개념으로 인식되면서, 대학교육에 있어서 변방으로 취급되어 왔다. 그러나 한라대학교가 처한 상황으로 인해 전략적으로 선택할 수밖에 없었던 실용, 실용적 글쓰기는 대학의 교양교육다움을 잃지 않으려 노력하는 한편 교양교육은 보조적인 여분의 영역이라는 대학 구성원들의 인식을 바꾸기 위해, 취업을 중시하는 사회적 풍토를 거스르지 않으면서, 한라대학교의 특성에 맞는 교육과정과 교재를 구축하는 데 있어서 각각의 영역들을 자연스럽게 엮어갈 수 있도록 하는 핵심적 개념 역할을 했다. 그 결과 교양교육 개편에 개입했던 제반 요인들이 대립적, 적대적 관계에서 서로의 논리와 운동성을 인정하면서 상호 견제의 관계로 진화하게 되면서, 실용과 교양교육에 대한 인식의 전환을 가져오게 되었다. This article is the research of general education by Halla University in Wonju Kangwon-do. Many researches about general education has been studied since late 1990’s. For the result of those researches, certain discussions about general educations has formed. And, the results of these discussions are started to appear. But still, there are some problems that needs more studies. The thing is, process of re-interpreting liberal and general education. Prior to make the discussion of universal and appropriate argument about general education, it is important that let each colleges harmonize to it’s situation. Because Halla University has short history, I think the problem of general education is complicated with two basic issues. First, organizing their general education in average level, and the other is to re-interpreting their general education to harmonize with the situation of Halla University. In cases of Halla University, they realized that general education is important to adapt their freshman easily to their new university life. The percentage of students who abandons their register and giving up the school has extremely decreased. Also it brought the school alive. With this result, Halla University developed and managed the program which leads students to self-respect and dignity and to manage their future. And the result of this program turned out really well, so Halla University could make general education school which is autonomous and independent. Also the school could hire professional person who can take charge the general education. They will continue their effort to maintain the original meaning of general education. They are still in the process to work for the general education.
