This study aims to deal with structured surfaces in contemporary architecture, which is in part related with Gilles Deleuze's philosophical notion on the fold and skins. Actual concerns on ‘skin’ in architectural projects were from the Swiss architects’ group, Herzog & de Meuron. Now the concept is being extended not only to its depth, but also to the media facade and the structured skin. In contemporary market society, architectural buildings are mostly produced not as an work of culture, but as a legal maximum FAR(floor area ratio) commodities. Architects themselves cannot resist the mega forces of global capital gain system. Therefore, the new development of the skin as a medium of architectural space to deal with, was one of the survival strategies of architects in my opinion. The skin, or the surface is not any more superficial part of the whole, as Deleuze describes it. The mediated multiple skins became one of the most trendy concerns among architects, as we have seen in many renowned architectural examples such as 2008 Beijing Olympic Stadium and Beijing National Aquatics Center, Water Cube. The concept of structured surfaces are being applied to the design of K-University's design studio as a case study for localization and actualization. Although, there were many difficulties and practical problems in design and construction, it was meaningful efforts to realize a architectural concept in an academy field into a concrete functioning entity through collaborations with other specialists in different fields.

There are many ways to create identity of a city, which is in reality constantly changing through lots of factors involved with a city. The fact that art events and museum architecture projects can be vital driving forces to make an identity of a city can be found in the case studies, such as Venice Biennale, Kasell Documenta, Yokohama Triennale, Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum, Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, and Frankfurt Museum Banks projects. In summary, the identity of a city can be made through incessant time consuming efforts and also, without these efforts, a city can lose its competitiveness. Therefore, it is quite important to create an identity of a city with all means and make efforts not to lose its identity.

The work of Coop Himmelblau is very much different from that of the other contemporary architects. Their interest is based on the concept of 'open architecture' which is derived from that of Karl Popper's Open Society. Their design is very much dependent on the initial sketch which they call 'the establishment of the psychic ground plan'. From the sketch they start to make three dimensional models with boxes and thin metal bars, and then they develop plans and elevations based on the models and sketches in terms of functional requirements. The way they do initial sketches is 'to close their eyes and draw while concentrating on the feeling of the very moment of creating space'. These are very much similar with that of automatism in Surrealism and Action-Painting. Through this paper, these relationships and the features in Coop Himmelblau's architecture are examined.

Contemporary Dutch architecture has attracted vast amount of attention from all over the world in recent architectural discourse. Especially, Rem Koolhaas from OMA, MVRDV, UN Studio, NOX, and Adriaan Geuze from WEST 8 are the architects and architectural groups at the center of so-called 'Dutch phenomenon' in the 1990s. They share some common denominators not only in their nationality, but also in their interest and the way they design architectural buildings, which is different from the traditional ones. Their architecture is focused more on the issues such as data, movements, diagrams, invisible forces mapping and re-programming, rather than the ones like scale, proportions and material tectonics, which were major concerns in traditional architecture. The new Dutch trends of research-based data-driven architecture and mapping-based diagram architecture, is now popular among young architects and students around the world, and has formed another main stream of architectural trend in contemporary architectural fields since 1990s.

Frank O. Gehry is one of the most outstanding figures in contemporary architecture. Gehry is an architect based on Los Angeles, who is now making projects around the world. In the work of Gehry, a lot of common features with contemporary art, such as Minimalism, Pop-Art can be found. Through this paper, the shared features with contemporary art, especially Pop-Art and Minimalism were examined and discovered based on what Gehry has said so far and what could be found from his projects. This can be, I believe, very much fruitful to understand contemporary architecture and art and could help to figure out what is going on in recent architecture.
