본 논문은 원외 대중정당모델로 출발한 민주노동당이 2004년 원내진출 이후 대중정당의 특성이 약해지고, 그에 대한 반작용으로 ‘원내정당화 현상’이 촉진되면서 당의 성격이 변화했다는 선행연구에 주목한다. 그 선행연구에 이어서 본 논문에서는 이 같은 ‘민주노동당의 원내 정당화 현상’이 일시적이고 상황적인 성격의 것인지 아니면 시대불가역적으로 진행되고 있는 후기산업화와 지구화와 같은 시대전환적인 구조변동과 연동되어 있는 성격의 것인지 여부를 확인하고자 한다. 왜냐하면, 민주노동당의 원내정당화의 촉진배경이 시대전환적인 사회구조변동과 연관되어 있다면, 민주노동당 변화사례는 원내정당모델과 관련하여 거리가 먼 ‘least-likely case(가설에 가장 잘 들어맞을 가능성이 없는 사례)’ 로서 대중정당모델의 한계를 설명하는 것을 포함하여 한국적 시대상황에 부합하는 대안정당모델의 하나로서 원내정당모델의 시대적 적실성을 논할 수 있는 사례라 할 수 있기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 대중정당모델로 출발한 민주노동당이 원내정당모델로 변화하는 성격이 무엇인지를 확인하는 데 그 방법적 효율성과 유용성이 큰 ‘표적집단심층인터뷰(F.G.I.: Focus Group Interview)’ 내용을 활용하고자 한다. This paper pays attention on the primary research having shown that Korean Democratic Labor Party, set out as a mass party model, has lost the traits of mass party and, as a reaction, it has adjusted since it attained parliamentary seats in 2004. Subsequently, this study attempts to clarify whether such a phenomena is temporal and circumstantial or this is a part of unavoidable social transition just like that of post-industrialization and globalization. If the accelerated nature of Korean Democratic Labor Party as a parliamentary party is related to the structure change of social transition, then this case can be regarded as a least-likely case of parliamentary party. In other words, this is a suitable case to address the periodical relevance of parliamentary model party and explain the limitation of mass model party as an alternative party model in the context of Korean society. This paper utilizes F.G.I. to clarify the changing nature of Korean Democratic Labor Party, that started as a mass party model but adjusted to a parliamentary party.
