한국에서 생일 기념의 의미를 사상적, 철학적 차원에서 고찰하였다. 특히 동양의 사생관(死生觀) 및 ‘생(生)’의 철학, 그리고 ‘효(孝)’ 사상과 관련시켜 살펴보았다. 이들은 각기 서로 구분해서 말할 수 있지만 결국 하나로 통한다. 우리 민족에게는 출생과 삶을 중시하는 사상적, 문화적 전통이 내려왔다. 생일 기념의 밑바탕에는 생명 존중사상이 깔려 있다. 여기에 자신의 귀중한 몸을 잘 유지, 보존하여 후세에 전하라는 데 의미가 곁들여 있다. 유가에서는 연속적인 사생관(死生觀)을 말한다. ‘효’ 사상은 기본적으로 생명의 속성인 연속성 그 자체에 뿌리를 두고 있다. ‘연속적’이라는 것은 하나의 개체가 지닌 자연생명이 무한하다는 의미가 아니다. ‘낳고 낳음’의 연속적 지평을 통한 죽음의 초월이요 영생을 말한다. ‘생명의 연속성’에 대한 염원은 전통적인 ‘효’사상과 연결되어 생일 기념의 의미를 뿌리 내리는 데 결정적 기여를 하였다. 세상을 떠난 부모의 회갑이나 생신을 맞아 기념 제사를 봉행하였던 역사적 사례를 통해 생일을 기념하는 의미와 효문화 사이의 연결 고리를 찾을 수 있다. 우리나라에서 생일 기념의 의미는 ‘살아 있음’과 ‘생명의 연속성’을 확인하는 데서 찾아야 할 것이다. This paper is to examine the meaning of birthday celebration in an ideological and philosophical dimension, particularly in terms of the oriental view of life and death (死生觀), philosophy of ‘life (生)’ and the idea of ‘filial duty (孝).’ These are separate notions but ultimately connected as one. Korean people have inherited ideological and cultural tradition that stresses birth and life. Birthday rituals are based on the principle of life respect, which also implies one should well maintain and preserve one’s body and pass it down to the next generation. It refers to the view of continual life and death in Confucianism. The idea of ‘filial duty’ is fundamentally rooted in continuity itself, an attribute of life. ‘Being continual’ does not mean that natural life of a single individual is infinite. It signifies transcendence of death and eternal life through the continual prospect of ‘giving birth and being born.’ Human desire for ‘continuity of life’ is linked to traditional idea of ‘filial duty’, which has critically contributed to rootage of birthday rituals. The link between birthday rituals and culture of filial duty is found through historical cases that descendants hold a memorial service to celebrate their late parents’ birthday, particularly their 60<sup>th</sup> anniversary. Birthday in Korea is definitely a ritual to assure ourselves of ‘being alive’ and ‘continuity of life.’
