Safety and integrity are required for reactor pressure vessels because they are operated in high temperature. There are single specimen method, multiple specimen method, and load ratio analysis method which used as evaluation of safety and integrity for reactor pressure vessels. In this study, the fracture resistance curve (J-R curve), elastic-plastic fracture toughness (JIC) and material tearing modulus (Tmat) of SA 508 class 3 alloy steel used as reactor pressure vessel steel are measured and evaluated at room temperature, 200℃ and 300℃ according to unloading compliance method and load ratio analysis method. And then the comparison with experimental JIC and theoretical JIC by local fracture strain is managed.

SG-365 steel is an important material and used for manufacturing a pressure vessel which the gas piping. In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the an unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E813-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove 1CT specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the JIC. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method Besides, it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering of them and tunneling and shear lip by the side groove.

In this study, the J-Resistance Curve and material tearing modulus of SA508-C3 steel, which is one of the used nuclear pressure vessel steel, are measured at room temperature, 200℃ and 300℃ according to load ratio analysis and ASTM E813, ASTM E1152, respectively. It is observed that J-R curve and Tmat value decrease as the temperature level increase. Applicability of Tj proposed by Paris et al as an instability parameter for ductile material is investigated. It is concluded that results are the Tj parameter may be used as a crack instability parameter.
Load-Ratio법에 의한 SA508C-3와 알루미늄 합금의 탄소성 파괴저항 곡선평가

A method is proposed to evaluate the elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve only with load displacement records without the crack length measurement in CT specimen. This method is based on the idea that the effect of plastic deformation and the crack growth can be measured only by using a load-displacement record. If we know the reference-load curve representing the hardening of specimen, then the crack extension can be calculated by the elastic compliance determined from the load ratio.<br/> The results of this proposed method were compared to those of the elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve for the ASTM standard unloading compliance method. The experimental results for two kinds of ductile materials showed that the proposed method well simulates the material J-R curves. This method is currently applied for CT specimens, but it can be extended to the other specimen geometries.

The fracture resistance curve is one of most important and design techniques employed in nuclear pressure vessel structures. This study is to evaluate the J-R curve characteristics for the SA508C-3 by the unloading compliance method and load ratio analysis. The effect of strain aging for the exponential correlation of the J-R curve in this metal are investigated at room temperature, 200℃ and 300℃. The load ratio analysis method can evaluate the J-R curve by using the simple tension load-displacement curve only without the repeat of the unloading and loading. Therefore, the analysis by the proposed load ratio method has a merit, in comparison with the unloading compliance method, which can measure the crack length without the precision measurement equipment.

Effect of an accelerated iso-thermal aging (375℃×66days, 375℃×200days) on elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve were examined in SA533B low alloy steel. Fracture toughness test are conducted by unloading compliance method at room temperature. But the apparent negative crack growth phenomenon, usually arise in partial unloading compliance test. The phenomenon of negative crack growth may be eliminated by the offset technique. There is no effect of aging on JIC and dJ/da in iso-thermal aged (375℃×66 days) specimen, but there is very little effect in iso-thermal aged (375℃×200 days) specimen.

Effects of an accelerated iso-thermal aging (375˚x 66 days) and a prestressing on the elastic-plastic fracture toughness are examined for the unclear reactor pressure vessel steel, A533B-1, The elastic-plastic fracture toughness tests were conducted at the room temperature or 300˚C. In the test temperature, J₁c decreases due to above effects. However, if the results are interpreted in terms of total J-integral which accounts for J due to pre-loading, they have no effect. So, the main reason for decreasing J₁c should be attributed to the pre-loading. Also, they have no effect on the tangent of the R-curve.
