The Hollywood Red Scare: An Attack on the Labor and Progressive Politics of Hollywood

2010 International Area Studies Review Vol.13 No.3

This paper examines the Hollywood Red Scare as one of the most prominent instances of Hollywood’s implication in real-life politics. Occurring amid the fear of communist subversion of American society and anti-communist fervor that gripped the nation in the wake of the Cold War after World War II, the event was the Hollywood rendition of the anti-communist crusade. However, the Hollywood Red Scare was not a mere reflection or an extension of the concern of communist subversion and the anti-communist sentiment of the greater society. Nor did it occur to Hollywood by accident. This paper shows that the Hollywood Red Scare was also a response to internal developments, i.e., the challenges from organized labor and progressive politics of the 1930s. In other words, the Hollywood Red Scare provided an occasion to drive out militant labor, its supporters, and other radicals that gained ground during the 1930s. The ferocity of the Hollywood Red Scare was a testimony to the seriousness of these challenges from within as well as the fact that at stake was the control of an industry that had the enormous impact on popular imagination.

Postwar Consumer Culture and the Rise of Market Segmentation in the U.S.

Vol.35 No.-

This paper examines the shift to market segmentation in the U.S. between the late 1950s and the 1970s. It looks at market segmentation as an important development in consumer culture that helped sustain consumption and respond to changes in society. The shift to market segmentation began in the late 1950s amid the concerns over the saturation of the mass market. As a major change to mass consumption, market segmentation signaled the market’s embrace of difference and diversity in line with larger changes in American society, giving recognition to groups that had long been discriminated and thereby offering greater choices. At the same time, such changes only strengthened consumer culture, as marketers came to take advantage of social turmoil and divisiveness through market segmentation, incorporating developments that could have threatened a consumer culture under mass consumption. Lifestyle segmentation, as it developed in the 1970s, also indicated continued power of consumer culture. Marketers seized lifestyle segmentation to constantly divide up Americans. In particular, faced with the ever growing pressure to find new profitable segments beyond the existing ones, they came to highlight the divisive developments they could utilize in segmenting people. As this helped reinforce ongoing divisions and fragmentation, consumer culture did not simply respond to larger changes in society, but came to shape American society.

Setting the Scene for the Boom: The Korean Government’s Policies and the Resurgence of the Korean Film Industry

Vol.17 No.3

The Korean film industry underwent dramatic changes in the past decade. Hollywood films had long dominated the Korean market. Yet, this suddenly changed in the late 1990s when the Korean film industry began to churn out box office hits and thus came to challenge Hollywood’s supremacy in Korea. Recognizing the centrality of the Korean government’s policies in the development of the Korean film industry, in this article I aim to examine the changes in the Korean government’s policies and how they contributed to the resurgence of the Korean film industry. I first look at the Korean government’s policies before the 1990s and how they led to the decline of the Korean film industry. I examine the significant changes in the government’s view and policies with regard to the culture industry in the mid-1990s and the reasons behind these changes. I review how this context came to provide a backdrop for the changes in the government policies toward the Korean film industry from control and regulation to promotion and support. I also briefly discuss the limits of these changes, as they narrowly focused on the economic aspect of the film industry.

May Day: Making and Unmaking Radical History in the U.S.

Vol.23 No.-

This paper examines why and how May Day, which is celebrated worldwide as the International Workers’ Day on May 1 each year, has been forgotten in the U.S., the country of its origin, and written out of its history and what it implies. It examines the history of May Day in the U.S. as one of the prime instances of taming and breaking down radical class politics and narrowing down the political horizon in the country. It first briefly looks at May Day’s origin in the U.S. and its subsequent transformation into the International Workers’ Day in the late 19th century. It also examines how the holiday came to be associated with political radicalism during this period. Following this, the paper recounts May Day’s evolution in the U.S. in the early 20th century by focusing on how diverse groups including trade unionists and political radicals struggled and interacted to fix and control May Day’s symbolic meanings, to (un)make radical history, and to (re)shape popular memory. It then looks at how May Day’s heyday in the 1930s was ironically followed by its demise in the mid‐20th century, as the holiday faced the heightened oppositions amid the viciousness of Cold War anti‐communism.

Netflix and Changes in the Hollywood Film Industry

        주정숙,Joo, Jeong-Suk DAEHAN Society of Industrial Management 2020 산업융합연구 Vol.18 No.5

This paper aims to explore and shed light on how the rise of streaming services has been affecting the media landscape in the recent years by looking at the conflicts between the Hollywood film industry and Netflix. It especially examines Netflix's disregard for the theatrical release, as it is the most portentous issue that could reshape the film industry, and Hollywood's opposition to it as revealed through the 2019 Academy Awards where the issue was brought into sharp relief. At the same time, this paper also questions whether theatrical distribution makes a film any more cinematic by examining how Hollywood film production has been largely concentrated on tentpoles and franchises, while Netflix has been producing diverse films often shunned by the studios. In this light, it concludes the changes wrought by Netflix, including its bypassing of the theatrical release, are not likely to be reversed.

The Streaming Industry in the U.S.: The Present and Future Prospects

2024 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.12 No.1

In this paper, we aim to examine the recent state of the streaming industry in the U.S., and its future prospects as the most important force shaping the media landscape across the globe. First, we examine the launch of Disney’s streaming services in late 2019 that heralded the start of the so-called streaming war to win subscribers and how the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 helped its rapid growth. Then, we look at the crisis of the streaming industry in 2022, as subscriber growth slowed down for the first time and losses increased, and how this led to the growing emphasis on profitability. We also explore the subsequent attempts by streaming companies to cut costs and create more revenue, with the result that they were retreating from the previous strategy to grow their platforms at all costs. From this, we highlight that, while the future course of the streaming industry is not yet determined, the recent upheavals certainly made it more cost-conscious and conservative and less consumer-friendly.

Vol.6 No.-

We can find several similarities in the dramatic construction of korean mask-play and epic drama. If a dramatic spirit which composes the essence of epic drama lies in the objective critique which separates the feelings of spectators from the story of drama, the korean mask -play also requires the Judgement of spectators for realistic critique.

Hollywood Film Industry and the Changes in the Theatrical Release

2022 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.10 No.2

In this paper, we examine the shortening of the theatrical window whereby films play at theaters for 90 days as one of the most portentous issues that could reshape the Hollywood film industry. We first examine the windows system that protected the status of movie theaters and the studios’ attempt to shorten the theatrical release to create a premium VOD window in response to the declining revenue of DVDs after 2007 and the rise of streaming services. We then look at some of the major disruptions in distribution COVID-19 brought about. We also explore the shortening of the theatrical release in the wake of the pandemic and shows the changes in the theatrical release, along with the expansion of streaming services, raise questions over the long-held primacy of the theatrical release and the definition of film with the theatrical release as its part. From this, we highlight Hollywood at the crossroads of major changes with its future less certain than ever before.
