온라인 영작문 강의에서 상호작용을 활성화시키는 방안에 대한 연구

조수근 ( Soo Keun Cho ),김주혜 ( Joo Hae Kim ),이정화 ( Jeong Hwa Lee ) 경희대학교 언어연구소 2010 언어연구 Vol.27 No.1

Linguistic Research 27(1), 19-39. The purpose of this paper is to investigate effective methods to facilitate interactions in on-line composition courses. This study addressed the following questions: (1) How are the interactions going in the class? (2) Which are the effective methods to increase the interactions? To achieve the goals, an on-line questionnaire has been conducted on 225 EFL students. The study found that the interactions mainly occur between learners and lecturers, between learners and contents, and between learners and LMS, and that a few of the present methods lead to a high level of interactions. Our study also found that in order to boost interactions in web-based composition classes, learners should receive encouraging comments from lecturers when lagging behind; also they should have supplementary materials or feedback from native speakers. When it comes to facilitating the interactions between learners and contents, it is necessary to provide learners with sums-up at the end of each course, or opportunities for deepening their understanding. In addition, our study found that in order to facilitate the interaction between learners and LMS, appropriate individual feedback should be given to the learners regarding their achievements, a variety of multimedia materials should be provided, and any changes in syllabus should be informed. Furthermore, teaching assistants and tutors need to respond to questions as to the lectures or technology. (The Cyber University of Korea)

온라인대학 어린이영어 교육과정에 대한 학습자의 수요조사 연구

        조수근 ( Soo Keun Cho ) 한국외국어대학교 외국어교육연구소 2014 외국어교육연구 Vol.28 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to provide practical guidelines for online child English curriculum development. To achieve these goals, a questionnaire has been conducted on 45 students studying in the child English department of an online university. The results of the study showed that students reveal a variety of demographic information in terms of age and education background and they are highly motivated to acquire English-related certificates and teach English to their children. The results also showed that students are discontented with the department`s teaching practice and employment guidance while they find satisfaction in its course levels and contents, suggesting that the department should provide more teaching opportunities and strengthen employment support in different ways.

        한국어 내핵관계절 습득에서의 유생성 효과

        조수근 ( Soo Keun Cho ) 21세기영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학21 Vol.27 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the semantic feature (animacy) of the head nouns has influence on the acquisition of Korean head-internal relative clauses. To achieve these goals, a grammaticality judgement task has been conducted on 40 Korean speakers. Twenty test sentences were created according to four types of internally-headed relative clauses for a quantitative study. In this study, we found that Korean speakers judged the grammaticality of internally-headed relative clauses at a rate of around 50%, suggesting that they restrictively accept the existence of internally-headed relative clauses. We also found that object internally-headed relative clauses with an inanimate head were judged more correctly than those with an animate head which indicates that the animacy effect only work on the acquisition of object internally-headed relative clauses. The fact that the animacy of head nouns has a limited influence on the acquisition Korean internally-headed relative clauses suggests that there is some interrelation between head nouns’ animacy and the acquisition of internally-headed relative clauses in Korean.

한국인 성인학습자의 영어 습득에 있어서의 UG에 대한 접근성

        조수근 ( Soo Keun Cho ) 대한언어학회 2007 언어학 Vol.15 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether Universal Grammar(UG) is accessible to Korean adult learners of English as a foreign language. A comprehension task has been conducted on 20 Korean adult learners of English to access Korean adults` knowledge of the Complex Noun Phrase Constraint in English. The finding is that Korean adults exhibit respect for the Complex Noun Phrase Constraint in English. This suggests that Universal Grammar functions in Korean adults` English learning, providing an evidence showing that the acquisition device which operates in first language acquisition is also operative in foreign language acquisition.

온라인 영어독해 수업의 상호작용 활성화 방안에 대한 연구

        조수근 ( Soo Keun Cho ) 21세기영어영문학회 2011 영어영문학21 Vol.24 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to investigate methods to activate interaction in on-line reading courses. Two questions are addressed in this study: (1) What are the actual conditions of interaction occurring in on-line reading classes? (2) What are the methods for activating interaction for those classes? To achieve the goals, an on-line questionnaire has been conducted on 81 EFL students. The results show that interaction is generally not very active, and it mainly occurs between learners and lecturers, between learners and contents, between learners and tutors/assistants. In particular, the interaction between learners exhibits the lowest interaction level. The results also show that in order to promote their interaction with lecturers in on-line reading classes, learners should receive feedback and encouraging comments from lecturers. To activate learners` interaction with contents, it is necessary to provide learners with new vocabularies and expressions before their starting studying and summary pages at the end of the course. In addition, the results show that learners need to receive professional help from tutors and assistants with questions about the lecture and technical problems.

산출실험을 통해 알아 본 한국인에 의한 영어 관계절 구문의 습득 연구

        조수근 ( Soo Keun Cho ) 한국영어영문학회 2003 영어 영문학 Vol.49 No.1

The purpose of the article is to investigate how Korean adults produce relative clauses in English as a second language. The experiment involves an elicited production task, in which pairs of pictures and stickers of different colors were used. The subjects for the experiment consist of 14 Korean adults. The finding is that relative clauses with a subject gap are easier to acquire than those with an object or dative gap, which is attributed to the fact that subject gaps are easier to link to their head than object and dative gaps, according to the Structural Distance Principle suggested by O`Grady(1997). This result accords with the finding in first language acquisition that subject relative clauses are easier to process than object relative clauses in English, which is accounted for by the Structural Distance Principle. This supports the view that the acquisition device operating in first language acquisition also operates in second language acquisition.

온라인 영작문 수업에서 작문 연습에 중점을 둔 상호작용 활성화 방안

        조수근(Soo Keun Cho) 언어과학회 2013 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.65

The purpose of this study is to investigate efficient methods to facilitate interaction in on-line English composition classes, placing emphasis on interaction occurring in practicing of writing English. To achieve this goal, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted with 65 EFL learners and the survey form was adapted to an on-line version. 32 multiple- choice items and one open-ended task were created for a quantitative and qualitative study. The results of the study showed that in order to activate interaction between learners and lecturers, learners should have quick responses and encouragement from teachers. When it comes to the interaction in writing practice, learners should have feedback on their composition. The results of the study also showed that to enhance interaction between learners and contents, it is important to provide learners with instructional objectives and summaries. With regard to the interaction in writing practice, learners should be provided with evaluation criteria. In addition, the results of the study revealed that to promote learners` interaction with LMS, email, memo, chatting, and report room should be easily accessible to learners. The help with technical problems from teaching assistants and tutors is also suggested as an interactive method.
