It has been difficult to investigate consciousness in terms of neurobiology because of the fact that it is a private, first-person phenomenon. Nonetheless, the technical advances of electrophysiological' recording and functional imaging make it possible to approach consciousness and describe its neuroanatomical correlates, evolutionary merits and functional role. By studying many neurological cases in patients, such as ; coma, epilepsy, and dementia, Damasio(1999) published the impressive neural anatomy of consciousness. Conversely, in Buddhism consciousness is explained in the process of suffering caused by ignorance. Among the sutras, "The Awakening of Faith" describes consciousness as three subtle-six crude more clearly. Three subtle-six crude is considered to be accordant with the concept of consciousness by Damasio; proto-self appears to correspond to evolving mind, object to reproducing mind, core self to analytic mind, autobiographical self to continuing mind. However, there are differences between three subtle-six crude and the concept of consciousness by Damasio. First, the latter is on the assumption of subject-object dichotomy, while the former is on subject-object oneness. Lastly, the latter permits development of rules, ethics, sciences and arts, whereas the former causes suffering.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of schizophrenic patients on the Iowa Gambling Task(lGT). In addition, it was aimed to test whether the performance on IGT is related to working memory within schizophrenic group. Methods: Twenty-three stable schizophrenic patients and twenty-eight control subjects underwent computerized versions of the IGT and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(WCST). Results: Schizophrenic patients performed poorly on IGT relative to normal controls. On WCST performance, schizophrenic patients completed significantly fewer categories and made more errors than controls did. There was no significant relationship between IGT and WCST performance. Conclusion: It was suggested that schizophrenic patients have impaired decision-making and the performance on IGT is separable from cognitive functions considered to be related to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
