외국인 학부 유학생의 전공 이수 과정의 어려움 및 요구 조사 - 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 중심으로 -

The Purpose of this paper is to explore the difficulties and needs of international students studying in Korean universities. A total of 28 international students studying in Korea were interviewed in the manner of Focus Group Interview(FGI). Findings show that (1)international students had difficulties because of lack of understanding of major term and knowledge, lack of understanding of professors’ speech and the feeling of alienation as a foreign student, the uncaring attitude of professors. (2)And they hope to get supplementary materials or supplementary classes, receive evaluation separately from Korean students, and take easier major classes. These results show that the difficulty of international students is basically due to their lower Korean level than Korean students, but at the same time, there are difficulties due to difficulties in major learning itself. Therefore, diverse support have to be provided to help international students learn their major as well as improve their Korean language skills. (Pusan National University)

이 연구는 외국인 교환학생의 한국어 학습에서의 탈동기 경험을 조사하여 한국어 교육에서의 개선점을 찾는 데 목적이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 대학에서 수학 중인 교환학생을 대상으로 포커스 그룹(focus group)을 활용하여 이들의 탈동기 경험과 인식, 요구사항 등을 수집하고 분석하였다. 조사 결과 교환학생들은 교수 방법이나 선택 가능한 한국어 수업의 부족, 한국어 학습의 어려움 등으로 인해 한국어 학습 탈동기화 경험이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그동안 한국어 학습 탈동기에 대한 연구는 주로 설문조사와 같은 정량적인 방법이 활용되었으나 본 연구에서는 질적 연구방법을 통해 한국어 학습 탈동기 요인을 탐색적으로 살펴보았다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 교환학생이라는 한국어 학습자의 특성을 바탕으로 이들의 탈동기 경험과 인식을 살펴보며 국내 교환학생에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 교환학생의 한국어 학습 및 탈동기 경험에 대해 이해하고 이를 바탕으로 교환학생을 위한 한국어 교육 프로그램이 개선될 수 있기를 바란다. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the demotivational experiences of foreign exchange students in Korean language learning and to use the result to find solutions for Korean language education. Therefore, in this study, a focus group was used for interviewing exchange students’ demotivational experiences, perceptions, and requirements about studying in universities in Korea. As a result of the survey, it was found that exchange students experienced demotivation in Korean language learning due to the teaching methods, the lack of selectable Korean classes, and difficulties in learning Korean. In the meantime, studies on demotivation of Korean language learning have mainly used quantitative methods such as surveys, but this study is meaningful in that it explored the factors of demotivation through a qualitative research method. In addition, based on the characteristics of Korean language learners as exchange students, this study will help to improve our understanding of exchange students in Korea by examining their demotivational experiences. Based on this study, the Korean language education program for exchange students can be improved.
