In order to evaluate the protective effects of galangin on CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity, GOT, GPT and malondialdehyde(MDA) values were measured in ICR mice. Galangin,a flavonoid compound, was administered orally for six days and immediately CCl4 was injected intraperitoneally after the last dose of galangin. Mice were sacrificed at 24h after the administration of CCl4. In the multiple pre-treatments for 6 consecutive days, galangin showed more potent protective effects than silymarin as reference active compound in serum GOT, GPT and MDA values in the liver at all doses tested. Antioxidative activity was determined by measuring the amounts of MDA formed from ethyl linoleate by H2O2 in vitro. Galangin showed higher inhibition than silymarin. These results demonstrate a possible hepato-protective role of galangin against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in vivo and H2O2-induced lipid peroxidation in vitro. Therefore, galangin may be capable of protecting hepatotoxicity.

From 2006 through 2007, the highest need for the most urgent attention in Gangwon-do Wild Animal Rescue Center was wildlifevehicle collisions (WVC). The Korean Ministry of Environment reported 6543 WVC`s in 2005 and 5565 cases of WVC`s in 2006. In this study, data from the Gangwon-do Wild Animal Rescue Center was utilized to analyze WVC incidents and the movement of wildlife near roadways in Korea. From 2006 through the first half of 2008, the portable GPS device recorded accident location of the injured wildlife. Attempts were made to track and monitor the movements of four raccoon dogs and five Korean water deers near the roads. One raccoon dog and one Korean water deer were successfully tracked and monitored. Their locations were transmitted to cell phones. The amount of WVC`s was highest amongst the roads near the forests of Gangwon-do. The devices installed on the nearby roads did not protect the wildlife from WVC`s. Results using the CDMA-type GPS collar showed that wildlife often crossed the road even with devices installed to prevent this from crossing roads. This research analyzed the behaviors of different wildlife animals and WVC`s. New preventative measures need to be established to avoid roadkill. It is suggested that new streets be built or for an appropriate speed limit be implemented.

Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo kiautschensis) is a natural monument (No. 324) and is also classified as an endangered wildlife grade II the Ministry of Environment of Korea. Eurasian eagle owl is threatened by the human being. But the efficient rescue and treatment for Eurasian eagle owl are still problematic, due to lack of basic data. In this study, to obtain basic resources for establishing more efficient rescue system, we held a physical examination and measured size physical part. In addition, we analyzed blood sample and feces samples and autopsy. We conduct the physical examination with measuring tapes and scales for 16 live features and 11 dead features. After inhalation anesthesia take the blood samples from wing vein. Blood samples are analyzed in hematologic and chemistric method. Collect the feces through individual floor of cages from 12 live features and conduct the feces analysis. Autopsy was conducted for 11 dead samples. In physical examination, the mean body weight and total length of live features was 2.26±0.35kg, 61±2.38 ㎝. the mean body weight and total length of dead features was 1.57±0.51kg, 59.31±3.51cm. Mean PCV was 46.57±4.97%, while mean TPP was 3.49±0.57g/dL. In feces sample analysis, 9 of 12 owls(75%) were infested by gastrointestinal helminths. The infection rates were: Trematoda (41.7%), Capilaria sp.(66.7%), acanthocephalans (25%). In autopsy, we confirmed 11 features were infested by duplicated infection of more than 2 helminths. Result of this study will be used for establishing reference range for physical features, blood analysis in Eurasian eagle owl. Therefore, to obtain basic resources for establishing more efficient rescue system, we have to make long-term conservation plans for Eurasian eagle owl.
도축 소에 있어서 육안적 검사 방법에 따른 간질 감염 실태조사

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of fascioliasis in slaughtered cattle in Kangwon (Wonju, Hoengseong, Hongcheon, Cheorwon, Pyeongchang) province and Daejeon from October to December in 2014. From the total 10,780 examined cattle, 0.54% (58/10,780) were found to be positive for fascioliasis by postmortem macroscopic inspection. The Fasciola spp. infection rates were higher in the most Daejeon (1.83%, 41/2,240), followed by Hoengseong (0.40%, 15/3,714) and Hongcheon (0.22%, 2/901). It was not infected in the other regions. The outward appearances of Fasciola spp. infected livers looked almost normal and the worms were all parasitize in the main hepatic duct.
정상 한우 및 번식장애 한우에 대한 자궁 내 세균 분석

Uterine sterilization is important for improving fertility in cattle. This study compared bacterial flora in the uterus between healthy and repeat breeder cows (RBCs). The uterine flushing of six heifers, 13 healthy HanWoo cows and eight RBCs (HanWoo) were sampled, and 15 frozen semen samples were selected. Overall, 35 bacteria were identified from in HanWoo uterine flushing and semen. The bacterial genera identified from HanWoo uterine flushing were Alloiococcus, Bacillus, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Erysipelothrix, Gardnerella, Granulicatella, Kocuria, Pantoea, Pasteurella, Rothia, Serratia, Sphingomonas, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas and Streptococcus. The bacterial genera identified from HanWoo semen were Bacillus, Escherichia, Kocuria, Oligella, Pseudomonas, Serratia, Sphingomonas, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas and Streptococcus. The prevalence and presence of the identified bacteria between healthy cows and RBCs differed significantly. Further studies are needed to determine the role of these bacteria in the uterus of HanWoo cattle with reproductive disorder.

Bacterial infection of the uterus in Hanwoo can kill embryos. Therefore, many antibiotics have been used to treat this infection in the uterus of repeat breeders. Incorrect use of antibiotics has led to resistance in bacteria. Natural compounds have used as substitutes for antibiotics because they are safe and have very mild side effects. This study was conducted to examine the antimicrobial effects of five extracts from medicinal plants including Humulus japonicas (Hj), Phelledendron amurense (Pa), Viola mandshurica (Vm), Carthamus tinctorius (Ct), and Chelidoni herba (Ch) on bacteria isolated from the uterus of Hanwoo using the paper disc diffusion method. Hj and Pa extracts had potent antimicrobial effects against Staphylococcus lentus, Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli, and Bacillus pumilus. Pa had the greatest antimicrobial effect among the five medicinal plants and was effective against 19 types of bacteria from bovine uterus. Compared to Pa, Hj showed weaker antimicrobial effects on all the bacteria tested except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Vm, Ct, and Ch also showed weak antimicrobial effects on the tested bacteria. The results obtained suggest that Hj and Pa are natural compounds suitable for treating bacterial infection in repeat breeders and improving conception rates of Hanwoo.

Parasites cause great economic loss in livestock in Korea, and can be categorized as either or indirect losses. In order to monitor the parasites from October 2005 to January 2006, 401 samples were randomly collected from cattle farms and examined the prevalence of gastro-intestinal(GI) parasites by using the sucrose flotation method and formalin-ether centrifugation method. The overall infection rate of GI parasites was about 43.4%. Of these parasites, nematodes were identified as Capillaria bovis (5.5%), Strongyloides papillosus (2.5%), Trichuris discolor (1.2%). Cestoda was observed only one species, Moniezia benedeni (2.2%). The rate of Eimeria spp was 39.2%. A total of five species of Eimeria was identified; among the species identified as above E bovis and E zuernii appeared with relatively higher infection rates. The combined infection of parasites was 35.2% in single species, 29.0% in double and 2.0% in triple infections. No cases of clinical symptoms were observed in this survey. The EPG levels of each species of parasites were very low in all infected cases.
Mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome b 분석을 통한 한국 내 삵의 유전적 다양성 조사

Nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of 19 leopard cats (Prionailurus bangalensis euptilura) obtained from Seoul grand park zoo in South Korea were determined for analysing genetic diversity. In the leopard cats, 3 haplotypes of the partial cytochrome b sequences (603 base-pairs, bp) were identified. Haplotypes obtained from those genes showed existences of at least 3 maternal lineages of leopard cats in Korea. Tamura-Nei nucleotide distance among 3 haplotypes were 0.00. Molecular phylogenetic tree showed the similar clustering of haplotypes for genes. Meanwhile, no individual variations within the leopard cats in S. Korea. Genetic surveillance system of leopard cats in S. Korea is warranted for maintaining biological conservation.

Accumulated evidence indicate that Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) acts as an antioxidant and scavenger of free radicals as well as influencing apoptotis. Earlier studies have employed the inflammatory agent lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce severe sepsis. In the present study, we examined whether the intraperitoneal injection of EGb 761 increases the survival rate of mice in the LPS-induced severe sepsis model. The survival rate was significantly increased by 30% in mice administered with 100 mg/kg of EGb 761 but not in mice administered with 50 mg/kg EGb 761. In addition, pre-treatment with EGb 761 increased the survival rate (30%) but post-treatment with EGb 761 did not. These results suggest that EGb 761 may have clinical potential in preventing sepsis induced mortality.
