본 연구는 정신지체 특수학교의 방과후 학교에 대한 학부모의 인식을 알아보기 위하여 부산 지역의 정신지체 특수학교 6개교, 경남 지역의 정신지체 특수학교 5개교를 선정하여, 방과후 교육의 대상인 초, 중, 고등부 학생의 학부모 총150명을 조사 대상으로 실시하였으며, 연구에 적합한 것으로 판단된 최종 140 부의 설문자료를 바탕으로 도출된 결론을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 방과후 학교에 대한 학부모의 인식에 대하여는 자녀의 참여가 학부모의 맞벌이로 인한 학생들의 보호의 어려움으로 생기는 문제를 해결해주는 기능이 가장 높다고 인식하고 있으며, 필요성은 매우 필요하다는 의견이 다수였다. 프로그램에서는 특기·적성교육을 학부 모들이 가장 선호한다고 인식하고 있으며, 시기는 학기 중과 방학 중 모두를 필요로 함을알 수 있다. 인원 편성에서는 5명 미만으로 구성하여 질 높은 교육과 개별화된 교육을 원하고 있으며, 지도는 외부의 전문적인 능력을 갖춘 강사가 지도하기를 희망하였다. 방과후 학교에 대하여 학부모들은 상당수가 만족한다고 인식하고 있으며, 사교육비 부담 감소에 미치는 기여도에 있어 긍정적으로 받아들이는 것으로 보인다. 학부모들은 방과후 학교로 인하여 학부모의 여가 시간이 늘어나는 것에 대하여 긍정적으로 인식하고 있으며, 자녀의 특기·적성 능력 또한 향상 된 것으로 인식하고 있다. 끝으로 방과후 학교의 운영을 위해서는 전문적인 강사의 확보와 교육의 질을 높여주기를 개선 사항으로 제시하고 있다. The purpose of this study was to examine the parents` awareness of the after-school programs in special schools for children with mental retardation. The subjects in this study were 150 parents in special schools for children with mental retardation in Busan and Gyeong-nam province. After a survey was conducted, the responses from 140 parents were finally selected. The findings of the study were as follows: Concerning the parents` awareness of after-school programs, the best benefit of the programs was that it`s possible to take care of students from double-income families, and many of the parents felt the need for the programs. They preferred the kind of after-school programs that could improve the special talent of students, and they were in want of the programs during the semester and vacation. They wanted each program to be attended by less than five students, and to be conducted by outside experts. A lot of the parents expressed satisfaction with after-school programs, and felt that the programs contributed to curtailing private education spending and improving their children`s special talent. Given the findings of the study, it`s required to set up a precise evaluation system, and expert lecturers should be assured to take the quality of education to another level.
