This study aims to examine the effects that divergent thinking and metacognitive-four operations Thinking on children's problem solving ability. To achieve these purposes, 114 five-year old children were selected and were classified into three groups (a control group and two experimental groups). The findings of this study are as follows : (1) Metacognitive-four operation thinking significantly increased children's problem solving ability. (2) Divergent thinking did not significantly increase children's problem solving ability. (3) There was no difference between metacognitive four operation thinking and divergent thinking in effect on children's problem solving ability. (4) The effect of metacognitive four operation thinking on children's problem solving ability matters little to sex. Considering the findings from this research, it is suggested that metacognitive four operation thinking training is needed to improve children's problem solving ability.
