Vol.19 No.4
The purpose of this study is to examine a female teacher`s educational journey of becoming and living as a specialist PE teacher in an elementary school. By adopting an autoethnography research method, data were collected from memory, teacher`s reflective journal entries, and local documents. Data were analyzed by content analysis and structural analysis (Ellis, 2004). Findings revealed that my life as an elementary PE specialist teacher was categorized into `surviving` and `thriving.` The `surviving` life was characterized by the struggle with competing demands and expectations of teaching PE within an elementary school. It included `becoming an awkward movement specialist,` `transforming myself to a butch,` and `being a safety first recreation instructor.` Meanwhile, the `thriving` life was characterized by becoming a growth-oriented learner in the school by confronting the misconceptions and prejudices of PE and PE teachers. It included `having passion for PE classes,` `achieving positive recognition from colleagues,` and `seeking the right reasons for my job.` The findings show that a PE specialist teacher`s educational journey can be best understood as continuous pursuit of thriving life despite the struggles with survival needs.
