Solow 잔여치는 완전경쟁, 규모에 대한 보수불변 및 생산요소의 완전활용이라는 가정이 충족되지 않을 경우 생산성 변동의 척도로 부적합함이 밝혀져 왔다. 위 가정이 충족되지 않을 경우 Solow 잔여치는 일반적으로 수요변수들에 의해 영향을 받는다. 본 연구는 Solow 잔여치가 생산성 척도로 오류를 가져올 수 있는 이론적 근거를 제시하고 한국 경제의 Solow 잔여치와 수요변수 간의 관련성을 실증적으로 분석한다. 분석결과, Solow 잔여치는 수출, 통화량, 정부지출 등의 수요변수들로부터 예측가능하였다. 따라서 이 수요변수들과 Solow 잔여치 간 동태적 관련성을 살펴보기 위해 벡터오차수정모형(VECM)을 분석하였다. 충격반응함수 분석은 Solow 잔여치가 수요충격에 따라 경기순행적으로 변동함을 보여 주었으며, Solow 잔여치의 예측오차 분산도 국내와 외국의 수요변수들에 의해 대부분 설명되었다. 특히, 통화공급 충격이 이 추정치의 변동에 가장 큰 영향을 가지고 있었다. Solow 잔여치와 수요변수들 간 관련성은 이 추정치가 생산성 척도로 부정확함을 시사한다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 본 연구는 Solow 잔여치에서 경기변동을 제거한 보다 정확한 생산성 지표를 구하기 위한 조정방법을 제시한다. The measured Solow residual cannot be a genuine measure of productivity change, unless the conditions of perfect competition, a constant-returns-to-scale technology, and the full employment of labor and capital are all satisfied. In these circumstances, the measured Solow residual will usually be affected by demand-side variables. This study investigates the relationship between the measured Solow residual and demand-side variables for the Korean economy. The measured Solow residual is shown to be Granger-caused by several demand-side variables, including exports, M1, and government expenditure. A vector error correction model is constructed to investigate the dynamic relation between these demand-side variables and the Solow residual. Impulse response functions show that the measured Solow residual moves pro-cyclically with demand shocks, and that the forecast error variance of the measured Solow residual is mostly explained by past innovations in these demand-side variables. This paper also provides a method of eliminating cyclical effects from the Solow residual to measure productivity more accurately.
