미디어에 나타난 색의 재현과 문화 정체성

이희은 이화여자대학교 이화인문과학원 2009 탈경계 인문학 Vol.2 No.3

This article is an exploration of the representation of 'colors', in relation to cultural identity, in contemporary Korean media. The concept of 'skin color' and racial issues have been widely debated in the popular media, as well as the social sciences and humanities in general, but have rarely surfaced as an academic theme in conjunction with constructing Korean national identity. This paper introduces the concept of '(skin) color' as an additional theoretical perspective available to critical cultural and media studies. The empirical section of the paper is primarily, though not exclusively, concerned with visual and audio representations because the sight and sound of popular media have become central and authoritative means of constructing meanings, feelings and knowledge. The study suggests that the signification of color, or the representation of color, is dominated by the dichotomy of 'We' and 'Others', resulting in the theme of skin color being excluded from academic discussions of the racial, cultural, and national identity. At the same time, the marketing strategy to make Korean identity 'colorful', both in media representation and the national policy making process, is a symptom of the contextual transition from a society based on the myth of a racially homogeneous nation to a society pushed by the dual power of globalization and localization.
