Selecting an appropriate actuator is important to meet the performance requirements of mechatronic systems. In typical motion control applications, the general design parameters of an electric motor system, such as the power, the maximum torque, the normal operation speed, and the mechanical dimensions, have been considered as the main factors of the actuator selection. For more demanding systems that require both high performance and high precision, however, extra care is necessary in the selection of an actuation system. In this paper, the current waveforms, the inrush current, the torque ripples, and the frequency responses of various brushless DC motors are analyzed with respect to the number of poles and terminal resistance as additional design parameters. Based on the analysis results, a guideline is provided for selecting an appropriate brushless DC motor for a high performance mechatronic system.
