Torque converter of automatic transmission transmits the power from engine to vehicle with its fluid parts and lock up clutch. In order to enhance vehicle performance, torque converter has to be multiplied, but in this case power loss by fluid parts necessarily occurs. On the other hand, to improve the fuel efficiency, the vehicle must be operated in a direct state using the lock up clutch of the torque converter. Therefore it is necessary to study the types of torque converter such as torsion spring stiffness, lock up rpm, inertia of engine side and transmission side to improve fuel efficiency and vehicle performance. This study will propose optimized torque converter for fuel efficiency and vehicle performance of passenger car and SUV vehicles with analysis and test of torsional vibration model of driveline.

Torque converter consists of fluid clutch and lock-up clutch. When the lock-up clutch activates, piston operation transfers the engine power to the transmission. In recent times, in order to meet the requirements for light weight and stability, Torque converter requires optimized design using structural analysis considering maximum load. The most effective parts to lightweight is piston of lock-up clutch which is necessary design criteria. In addition, study for life optimization was conducted. For analysis, piston shape is of single facing clutch type. In the future, this study will aid for structural design of piston.
