This paper proposes a method for distinguishing between pedestrians and vehicles using 24 ㎓ radar measurements and a machine-learning algorithm. In order to effectively detect moving objects, a radar signal processing algorithm based on frequency-shift keying is implemented on the embedded system equipped with filtering and amplification circuits. A Kalman Filter-based tracking algorithm is used to reject radar clutter noise and improve the identification of moving objects. Various features are obtained from a sample radar data set and linear discriminant analysis is applied to obtain a linear transformation matrix which can effectively discriminate between vehicles and pedestrians based on these features in real time. The proposed method is validated through the use of experimental data sets, exhibiting a level of performance suitable for vehicle rear cross-traffic alert systems.

In this paper, we investigated possible optical parameters causing deviation of experimentally observed output spectra from theoretically predicted results in a high-order fiber comb filter based on a polarization-diversity loop configuration. They include wavelength dependency of half-wave plates (HWPs) inserted in the filter for wavelength switching and the modal birefringence of single-mode fibers (SMFs) with which optical components comprising the filter are connected. In order to consider the effect of the modal birefringence of the SMF on a filter performance, it is modeled as a low birefringence fiber with an arbitrary orientation angle and birefringence. It is found from the simulation results that the modal birefringence of SMFs strongly affects the spectral characteristics of the filter and decreases the extinction ratio of the filter, compared with the wavelength dependency of HWPs. In particular, it is also confirmed that the spectral deviation and asymmetric distortions of side-lobes in narrow band transmission spectra result mainly from the modal birefringence of SMFs.

In this paper, we implemented a polarimetric vibration sensor using a Sagnac birefringence interferometer composed of polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber(PM-PCF). By changing the amplitude and frequency of vibration applied to PM-PCF employed as the sensor head of the proposed sensor, sensor responses to various types of vibration were investigated. First, the vibration characteristic of the sensor was explored for a single frequency in a frequency range from 1 to 3000Hz with a cylindrical piezoelectric transducer, and then the sensor response to naturally damped vibration was examined by utilizing a metal cantilever. It was experimentally observed that the sensor output signal was deteriorated by more than 3dB at ∼1900Hz in the single frequency vibration measurement with a minimum detectable strain perturbation of ∼1.34nε/Hz1/2 at 1500Hz and the peak value of the sensor output signal was proportional to the strength of initially applied stress in the naturally damped vibration measurement.
