현대 유리조형은 기존의 유리공예 개념과는 달리 조형에 중점을 두면서 예술과 산업의 접목을 시도한다. 특히 유리조형에서 나타나는 일루전(Illusion)의 개념은 기존 미술에서 논의되던 일루전 개념과는 달리 유리라는 재료 자체에서 나오는 시각의 확장성을 통해 예술 공간의 개념을 확장시키는 것이다. 시지각의 대상을 단순히 대상으로만 한정하는 기존의 입체조형과는 달리 유리조형은 시·지각이 가지는 다양한 요소를 일상공간에 배치함으로써 예술공간이 일상공간에 공존하는 것을 가능하게 한다.이러한 유리조형은 이미 건축을 비롯한 산업과 접목을 하고 있는데, 특히 유리 재료 산업의 발전은 유리조형의 예술적 기능을 강화하고, 유리조형의 예술성은 기존의 유리산업이 가지는 형태적 한계성을 극복해주는 효과를 가져다준다. 따라서 유리조형은 미래의 새로운 예술교육과 산업에 접목할 수 있는 양식으로서 향후 더욱 더 다양한 방식으로 예술과 현실에 접목할 수 있는 요소를 가지고 있다.본 고에서는 유리가 예술적· 산업적 측면을 논구한다. 특히 현대 유리산업이 비약적으로 발전함에 따라 예술적 효과라는 재료적 의미를 넘어서 유리 자체가 조형의 한 양식으로 정립된다. 현대의 미술가들 중에서 나움 가보, 댄 그래험, 래리 벨의 작품들은 유리와 현대미술이 서로 융합되는 형태들을 보여주고 있고, 특히 일루전의 측면에서 유리가 가지는 시지각적 요소들은 예술 공간과 일상공간을 매개하는 역할을 한다.국내에서 유리조형은 이제 시작하는 개념이다. 기존의 입체의 방식과 다르게 유리조형은 산업동향과 밀접한 연관을 가지고 있다. 유리기술의 발전은 예술적 조형을 더욱 풍부하게 해주고 유리가 가지는 시지각적 요소는 일상과 예술 양자에 고르게 영향을 주고 있다. 결국 유리조형은 실용적인 측면을 바탕으로 예술적으로 성장하는 것이다. 이런 점에서 유리조형은 예술교육과 예술의 새로운 직업군으로 성장할 가능성을 가지고 있다. Modern glass art focuses on the art aspect unlike the old concept of glass crafts, making an attempt at the incorporation of art and industry. The concept of illusion in glass art, in particular, expands the concept of art space through the expandability of vision deriving from the glass material itself unlike the illusion concept discussed in the old art. Glass art has already attempted to combine with industries including architecture. The development of the glass materials industry has especially reinforced the artistic functions of glass art, and the artistry of glass art has been effective for overcoming the form limitations of the old glass industry. As a style capable of being incorporated into new art education and industry in the future, glass art has elements to integrate art into reality in much more diverse ways.This study discussed the concept of sublimation from glass to art through the historic development of glass and the industrial and artistic aspects of glass. Works by such modern artists as Naum Gabo, Dan Graham and Larry Bell show the forms of glass fusing with modern art. The visual perception elements of glass mediate between art space and daily space in the illusion aspect.In South Korea, glass art is a burgeoning concept. Unlike the old three-dimensional style, glass art is closely related to industrial trends. The development of glass technology enriches artistic sculpture even further, and the visual perception elements of glass have even influences both on daily life and art. In the end, glass art makes artistic growth based on its practical aspects, in which sense glass art has the possibilities of growing into a new occupational group in art education and art.
