In this study, a computer program has been developed which predicts the pressure variations and cylinder properties including charging efficiency by the analysis of the flow in each part of a multi -cylinder spark ignition engine. For the flow calculation in the intake and exhaust manifold, the method of characteristics has been used, and for the property calculation in the cylinder, the various combustion models have been used. The
experimential work has been carried out and the results of simulation have been compared with that of experiments.
In this study, a computer program has been developed which predicts the engine performance characteristics by the analysis of the flow in the intake and exhaust manifold and the cylinder combustion calculation for the MPI spark ignition engines. For the flow calculation, the methods of characteristics has been used and for the calculation in the cylinder, the various combustion models have been used.
Using this program, a study for the optimal design of intake system has been carried out by varing the plenum chamber volume and the both lengths of the pipe which compose the pipe from surge tank to plenum chamber and that from plenum chamber to cylinder.
The experimental work has been pursued to get the pressure variations in both manifold and cylinder and volumetric efficiency. The result of simulation have been compared with that of experimential work and the optimal design data for the experimental engine could be found.
In this study, the simulation program for the prediction of volumetric efficiency by the resonator has been developed, when the resonator is mounted on the intake system of 4-cycle SI engines for the improvement of volumetric efficiency. The experimental work has also been carried out for the varification of the program, and it is found that the result of calculation by the simulation program fits qualitatively well with that of experiment. Finding the mounting position of resonator on the intake system and the influence of the variation of resonator's dimension such as neck length, volume and neck diameter could be found by the numerical calculation of the program. It is found that the position which is departed 150cm from plenum chamber is better than any other else as the mounting position of resonator, and the average amount of the increase of volumetric efficiency is about 2-3 %.
In this study, the computer program was developed to predict the engine performances and exhaust emissions of a 4-cylinder 4-stroke cycle spark ignition engine including intake and exhaust system.
The simulation models applied to each process were as follows. For the combustion process, two zone model which requires only one empirical constant was applied, and for the gas exchange process, the method of characteristics that allows the calculations of the time variation and spatial variation of properties along the pipes was used. Constant pressure perfect mixing model was applied to take into account of the interaction at manifold branchs. To predict exhaust emissions, twelve chemical species were considered to be present in combustion products. These species were calculated through equilibrium thermodynamics and kinetic theory.
The empirical constants reduced to least number as possible were determined through the comparison with the experimental indicator diagram of one particular operating condition and these constants were applied to other operating conditions.
The predicted performances and emissions were compared with the experimental results over the wide range of operating conditions.

The development of the effective computer simulation program which predicts the performances and emissions of the multi-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine has been described in the first paper.
In this paper, the comparison between the predictions and experiments of the transient pressure at each point in the intake and exhaust systems was made to examine the validity and availability of the simulation models adopted. This test was performed for the engines equipped with different turbochargers under various operating conditions.
The results of calculation showed good agreements with the experimental data and proved that the simulation program developed can be used for the matching of the turbocharger to the engine.

As a mean of increasing engine power. great attention has been concentrated on the turbocharging owing to better fuel economy. smaller engine size and lower emission. The performance in turbocharged engine depends not only on the efficiency of the engine and the turbocharger used, but also on the total characteristics of the system by the matching turbocharger to the engine. The matching of the turbocharger to the engine has been usually accomplished by the empirical techniques with a great deal of laborious work. It would be better to predict the performance and emission in the turbocharged engine using the effective simulation model.
In this study, computer simulation program has been developed to predict the transient variation of properties of gas in the cylinder, intake and exhaust pipes, the engine performances and emissions.
