In Confucianism, 'Ren'(which means benevolence or humanity) is considered the primary virtue, and what basically motivates 'Ren' is said to be Filial Piety and Brotherliness. Therefore, Filial Piety Education becomes a kind of means of Character Education. Educationists smuggest three categories, that is cognitive, affective, behavioral, for character education. 『Daxue: The Great Learning』, one of the classics of the Orient, describes educational theory which integrates cognitive, affective and behavioral categories as a means of defining virtue. A cognitive approach in Filial Piety Education is reading, nine thinking, emphasis on ethics. By the cognitive approach, Students can experience Filial Piety actions indirectly by contacting a wide range of information through recognition-based approach, and redefine their diverse views about Filial Piety by comparing each other's thoughts and opinions. An affective approach in Filial Piety Education is to have sincere mind, educate poems and music. By the affective approach, students will cultivate their emotion which relates Filial Piety and learn how to put the virtue of their Filial Piety into actions in harmony with other virtues. A behavioral approach in Filial Piety Education is to get into a habit of practice, to show good example by teacher. By the behavioral approach, we can use experience-based learning. Through this learning, students will recognize parental love; be able to put Filial Piety into practice; and promote respect for the aged in their mind. Based upon this theoretical background, I believe it will be desirable if Filial Piety education, a form of Character Education, is discussed in a way those three categories related to Filial Piety education are integrated.
