Preliminary survey of phytoplankton community structure and sucession have been carried out to estimate the correlation with water pollution in the lower Han River system during the period from November, 1989 to October, 1990. A total of 190 taxa of phytoplanktons, including diatom, dinoflagellate, green algae and blue-green algae, were identified. Among them, the dominant species are Asterionella gracillima, Diatoma vulgare, Melosira granulata v. angustissima, M. italica (diatoms), Anabaena menderi, Lyngbya contorta, Microcystis aeruginosa (blue-green algae), Actinastrum hantzschii v. fluviatile, Dictyosphaerium pulchellum (green algae). The diversity index somewhat decreased, compared with the previous record, mainly due to the increasing dominance of the genus Asterionella and Merlosira. Water pollution by means of biotic index, ranging from 67 to 167, indicates β-mesosaprobic in the lower Han River system.

The present study, as a part of taxonomical studies on copepods, has been carried out to clarify the freshwater copepod fauna in Lake Y ngsan, Korea. The monthly sampling of copepods was made at four selected stations in surveyed area during the period from June, 1983 to May, 1984. As a result, a total of 11 species representing 9 genera were identified. Of which, 2 species are described and illustrated new to Korean freshwaters: Canthocamptus carinatus, Shen et Sung, 1973; Halicyclops ryukyuensis, Ito, 1962.

A study on the taxonomy of the freshwater calanoid copepod has been carried out from the Han River reservoirs, Korea during the period from October, 1989 to April, 1990. Heterocope appendiculata identified in the present study is new records to the Korean freshwaters. All ten species in nine genera of the calanoid copepod are, therefore, known to Korean fauna at present.

The present study has been carried out to clarify the structure of zooplankton community in Han River reservoir, Korea. Samples were collected at eight selected stations by vertical hauls during the period from November 1989 to October 1990. Throught the period study, species composition and seasonal fluctuation of abundance of zooplankton community, mainly copepods, cladocerans and rotifers were analysed. A total of 64 species (28 copepods, 19 cladocerans, 17 rotifers) were identified, in which Asplanchna priodonta, Brachionus calyciflorus, Bosmina longirostris and Cyclops vicinus were dominant. The population density of zooplankton community showed the bimodal pattern in summer and fall. The maximum abundance (71,854 indiv./ ㎥) occurred in July 1990 at st. 2 and the minimum (78 indiv./㎥) in December 1989 at st. 8. Species diversity varied between 0 and 2.38. It increased sharply to a maximum in summer. The water quality of the Han River reservoir seem to the heavely polluted waters in the downstream when compared with in the upstream.

In order to clarify the seasonal succession of zooplankton community in Pal`tang reservoir, Korea, the study has been carried out monthly during the period from November 1989 to October 1991. Samples were collected at the dam site by vertical hauls. During the surveyed period, seasonal succession in the abundance of freshwater zooplankton, mainly copepods, cladocerans and rotifers, were analysed. A total of 67 species were identified. It consists of 24 species of cladocerans,16 species (including one subspecies) of copepods and 27 species of rotifers, respectively. Among them, Bosmina longirostris, Daphnia galeata, Cyclops vicinus, Brachionus calyciflorus, Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra vulgaris occurred dominantly. Abundance of zooplankton showed remarkably with seasonal fluctuation ranging from 288 (December, 1989)∼47,267indiv./m^3 (July, 1990). Dominance index ranged from 0.25∼0.93. Species diversity index varied between 0.64∼2.62. It increased sharply to maximum in late fall. Seasonal patterns of species diversity index was high in the summer and low in the winter. The level of water pollution according to the biological estimation appeared to oligosaprobic-mesosaprobic in the Pal`tang reservoir.
동물플랑크톤 포식활동에 따른 엽록소 a 의 현존량의 변화

The changes in the biomass of chlorophyll a by the grazing activity of the zooplankton were studied in the lower Han River system, during the period from May 1991 to October 1992. Chlorophyll a concentration changed remarkably with months and stations; ranging from 0.61mg/m^3 on May 1991 at station 8 to 91.63mg/m^3 on July 1992 at station 8 in the upper layers, while from 0.21mg/m^3 on March 1992 at station 1 to 88.97mg/m^3 on July 1992 at station 8 in the lower layers. The chlorophyll a concentration tended to become low when the cladoceran abundance was high during November∼June, a relationship not remarkably recognized in the blooming season of blue-green algae. However, during the blooming season, the chlorophyll a concentration was inclined to increase when the copepod abundance increased. Likely, their patterns were showed as the positive correlation during the non-blooming season. In rotifer community, during the non-blooming season for blue-green algae was not any correlation, compared with that negative correlation of Cladocera and Copepoda. On the other hand positive correlation can be seen between the chlorophyll a concentration and the population density of rotifer during the blooming season.

Changes of zooplankton community was observed at six stations during the period from June to October 1994 in Nakdong River. 40 species of zooplankton were identified; 11 genera and 14 species of cladocerans, 7 genera and 9 species including one unidentified species of copepods, and 9 genera and 17 species of rotifers. The dominant species of Zooplankton were Asplanchna priodonta, Brachionus angularis, Moina macrocopa. Copepod copepodids and nauplii were always dominant. The highest densities of rotifer were always observed at all stations. The seasonal fluctuation of abundance of zooplankton varied from 1,510 indiv. /m^3 to 1,024,093 indiv. /m^3 by months and stations. From June to October, chlorophyll-a ranged from 1.7 mg/m^3 to 173.6 mg/m^3. There was a prominent rise in phytoplankton biomass for the most stations from July to September.
Studies on the ecology and interdependence of zooplankton species in the lower Han River

漢江 下流系에 선정된 8개 定點에서 1989年 11月에서 1991年 10月에 걸쳐 每月 動物플랑크톤 群集의 動態를 硏究하였다. 期間 중에 動物플랑크톤의 出現種은 總 115種類로 枝角類가 36種類, 橈脚類가 26種類 그리고 輪蟲類가 53種類로 構成되여 있다. 그 중에서 이 水域의 優點種은 Asplanchna priodonta, Brachionus calyciflorus, Bosmina longirostris, Cyclops vicinus등으로 나타났다. 이 水域에서 얻어진 生物多樣性指數는 0∼2.38의 變化幅을 나타내고 있으며 이로 보아 漢江 下流系의 水質汚染은 上流에 비하여 下流가 極甚한 傾向을 나타내고 있음을 立證하는 것으로 思料된다.
