In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it has been widely studied to get the high performance and durability. In this study, the twin-fluid swirl type nozzle with a dual air(carrier air and assist air) supplying system was used to inject urea water solution. The air to liquid ratio was varied with 1.35, 1.80, 2.25, 2.70 at the fixed liquid flowrate. The carrier air mass flowrate and the quantity of injected urea water solution which is calculated from the NOx production model was fixed. The spray characteristics with the ALR were investigated experimentally thought a PDA system. As the results, the spray characteristics with increasing in ALR show the increased spray of the radial velocity, the more homogeneous volume flux and the SMD distribution with the radial distance. As ALR was increased, the NOx reduction rate is increased and the distribution of the injected urea solution upstream of SCR catalyst is relatively homogenized.

In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it has been widely studied to get the high performance and durability. In this study, the twin-fluid swirl type nozzle with a dual air supplying system was used to inject urea water solution. The NOx reduction ratio with the swirl angles of the nozzle was investigated experimentally. The swirl angle was varied with 0°, 45° and 90°, and the quantity of injected urea water solution which is calculated from the NOx production model was fixed. Urea solution is injected into the center of an exhaust pipe, and the spray direction is paralleled to the exhaust gas stream under the steady state condition in engine operation. The inlet temperature of the SCR catalyst is 350℃. As the results, the NOx reduction ratio with increasing in swirl angle of the twin-fluid nozzle is increased. As the swirl angle is increased, the distribution of the injected urea water solution upstream of SCR catalyst is relatively homogenized.

The regulations to reduce the exhaust emissions from vehicles are becoming increasingly stringent and encompassing more types of vehicles. In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it is widely studied to get the high performance and durability. However, the injection nozzles occur some problems, including the nozzle clogging, deposition of urea-water solution on the inner wall of exhaust pipe. In this study, the effects of nozzle cap geometry, the length to diameter ratio(l<SUB>o</SUB>/d<SUB>o</SUB>) on the spray characteristics were investigated. The mean velocity, AMD and SMD distributions of the sprays were measured using a 2-D PDA system along the centerline and radial direction. As the experimental results, the higher length to diameter ratio(l<SUB>o</SUB>/d<SUB>o</SUB>) affects the increase of axial mean velocity and the decrease of radial mean velocity. The AMD and SMD increased with the length to diameter ratio(l<SUB>o</SUB>/d<SUB>o</SUB>), as well.
