지금과는 달리 단오는 당시 한국의 중요한 명절로, 그네뛰기는 농업의 풍양과 여성의 생산을 기원하는 의미에서 단오의 중요한 세시풍속이었다. 이러한 단오의 중요한 민속놀이로 계승되어 온 그네뛰기는 근대에도 활발히 행해졌다. 그러나, 근대에 들어 그네뛰기는 크게 두 가지 변화를 겪었다. 먼저, 양력의 도입과 산업의 다양화로 인해 세시의 의미가 변화하면서, 단오절에 한정적으로 실시되던 그네뛰기가 시기에 관계없이 행해지게 되었다. 둘째, 그네뛰기가 경기화 볼거리화 된다. 지역마다 다양한 그네대회가 개최되었고 그것을 보기 위해 인파가 모여 관광열차가 운행되는 등 그네뛰기는 점차 스포츠화 되어가는 양상을 보인다. Play on swing seems to be turning into sport such as competitions were held on a variety of areas and crowd gathered to see it, tourist trains were on service.
