이 연구는 한국의 전통색인 오방간색(五方間色)을 조선시대 의복에서 살펴봄으로써 한국의 전통색에 대한 이해와 오방간색에 대한 조선시대의 미의 특성을 밝히고자 하였다. 한국의 전통색에 영향을 미치는 음양오행사상의 색채관과 오방간색의 형성원리를 통해 오방간색은 녹색(綠色), 벽색(碧色), 홍색(紅色), 유황색(硫黃色), 자색(紫色)이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 조선시대 의복에서 오방간색이 적용된 사례는 다음과 같이 요약되었다. 녹색계열(祿色系列)은 원삼, 당의 등 상의에 주로 사용되었다. 홍색계열(紅色系列)은 원삼, 속옷, 미혼여성의 치마에 널리 사용되었다. 벽색계열(碧色系列)은 청색을 지향하는 한민족의 남녀의복에서 두루 찾아볼 수 있었다. 자색계열(紫色系列)은 궁중에서 원삼이나 당의에 드물게 나타났고, 일반적으로는 저고리의 회장과 같이 적은 면적에 사용되었다. 유황색계열(.黃色系列)은 평민들의 저고리에서 주로 그사례를 살펴 볼 수 있었다. 사례를 통하여 조선시대 의복의 오방간색은 천연염재의 사용, 신분계급의 표현, 음양오행사상의 반영 그리고 세련된 배색효과의 표현특성이 나타났다. 조선시대의 의복에 나타난 오방간색의 미적 특성은 크게 네 가지로 분류할 수 있었다. 첫째, 오방간색은 한국의 서정적인 지리적 조건과 천연염료의 사용으로 자연친화적인 순수성이 나타났다. 둘째, 오방간색은 신분계급에 따른 색의 구분으로 길조를 상징하는 오방정색(五方正色)에 대한 동경이 표현되었다. 셋째, 오방간색은 음양오행과 유교사상에 의해 성에 대한 내재적 의미를 담고 있었다. 넷째, 오방간색은 원색과 배색되어 색상의 균형과 조화를 이루는 화합과 중재의 특성이 나타났다. 본 연구는 한국의 전통색의 재인식과 앞으로 현대 패션이 나아갈 방향에 오방간색의 의미를 부여하고자 하였다. 오방간색이 한국의 주체성이 깃든 색으로서 현대 패션산업에 다각적인 색채계획으로 활용되기를 기대한다. Since the color that is applied in the traditional costume symbolizes the aesthetic consciousness of the nationality and the view of the world, I want to study about the beauty of the traditional color through the clothing of the Joseon Dynasty. The colors used in the clothing of the Joseon dynasty consist of green, scarlet, deep blue, purple, sulfurous yellow, which were called obanggan colors. The green color represents a court suit that was used in Wonsam, Dangui, Danryeong and etc. For civilian clothes, the color was used in Jeogori and the skirt of female shaman. The scarlet color was used in court dresses such as Wonsam, Gonryoungpo, military uniform and Cheonui. Also, the color was widely used in the spinster’s skirt. The deep blue color was favored for its symbolic color for Korean unity. The purple color was used in Wonsam, Dangui and etc. In addition, it was usually used for small parts of Korean traditional clothing. Lastly, the sulfurous yellow color was used in Dangui for nobles and for Korean traditional jacket for civilians. In the aesthetic beauty of obanggan colors, four characteristics could be found. First, thanks to lyrically geographical conditions and natural dyeing, nature friendly purity could be found. Second, obanggan colors represented the desire for a good omen, by distinguishing the colors according to the social position class. Third, obanggan colors included the inherent meaning of gender in Yin-yang & five elements of the universe and Confucianism. Fourth, obanggan colors showed the feature of union and mediation of color balance and harmony. Through the five cardinal colors in clothing of the Joseon dynasty, I hope that the diverse color planning will be done in the modern fashion industry and further enrich Korean identities.
