IPM motors used as traction drive modules tend to have high torque ripple and can cause high levels of NVH. Several studies have been conducted on how to reduce the torque ripple of IPM motors. One approach is to design a specific shape of the rotor or stator to reduce the torque ripple, and another is to modify the control method or structural rigidity. However, as is well known, changing the structural rigidity or control method is a challenging task. The root cause of the vibration is fundamentally related to the electric force. There have been many studies on optimizing the electro-magnetic circuit to reduce torque ripple, but there are limitations to the optimization methods due to computing power and time-consuming. This paper proposes a method to design IPM motors that can be able to minimize the loss of maximum torque while reducing torque ripple at a specific speed.
