Vol.5 No.2

In these days there seems to be less emphasis in human nature and one feels the need of the Art of Dancing which is historically a most valuable and significant art. It is necessary therefore to reexamine the social position of the dancer as a creator of art. In primitive times dancing played an important role in the ceremonies of life, emphasizing the tribes as a community. A dancer then was a leader in these circumstances and he held a high social position. In the ancient times religions, dancing was the center of community life, so the dancer was much respected by the people as a peculiarly competent to make contact with the Divine. In the middle age the dancer became less important because of stoic and feudalistic ideas. In modern times with a revolution based in humanism, free artists shook off slavery and took charge of the performance of the dance. However, they were not treated very well. Today a main character is based in independence and a dancer is treated as an artist. So from this period a dancer should endeavor to improve his quality and dignity. A dancer then should do his best to create the art of dancing.

The real situation of children's dance is that it hasn't escaped from popularity and imitative nature without any change, while the merit of today's art is its vivid creative ability. The situation mentioned above results chiefly from different viewpoints of valves of dancing, the lack leadership in creative. aclivities and tendencies of make light of children's artistic works.

Vol.3 No.2

It was in 1930 that folk-dance was first introduced in to Korean society. The dance was tought to some Koreans by Y.W.C.A. and not spread commonly over Korea until the latter half of 1950s. Since the dance was added to the school curriculum, it has come to be considerably popular with the public as well as students. It is necessary for us to examine the educational effect and value of the folk-dance. The folk-dance originated in the farming folk's demand to be free from their economic oppression and hard labour early in the Middle Ages, but it was unsociably enjoyed by a few limited people for their recreation. Most of folk-dances have disappeared in the 20th century, while some ones preserved as the materials for folklore by desendants are performed only on a few special occasions. Such European folk-dance is not believed to be worth the attainment of our educational end If it is worth while, even the dances of manbou and rumba could also bring about the attainment of educational end. The European folk-dance may be enjoyed for a sort of recreation, but it cannot be applied to our school curriculum, for education is to develop Knowledge, skill, mind, or character of man, and not to de a recreation.

Vol.17 No.-

This study is to analyze the dance work 〈an Evening Game〉 of Kim Sam-jin through the semiotic methodology. The semiotics is a field of scholarship that analyzes and comprehends each text by regarding it as a scheme of sign. Here, applying the semiotic methodology as mentioned above to the analysis of dance works means that an objective and scientific methodology is to be introduced in the dance analysis. Therefore, this semiotic methodology overcomes a limit of impressionistic dance analysis that is often used before. This analysis shows both denotative and connotative meaning through a paradigmatic classification of formal factors in the dance works When the dance work 〈An Evening Game: performed by Sam-jin, Kim〉is analyzed by using binary oppositions, we can figure out the fact that the work contains paradigmatic oppositions mostly with the secondary meaning: the reality and the desire. In this dance work has the main actress a hard time in the differences between the reality and the desire. Thus, the work presents the troubles and limits which a woman can not come over and exceed in the world of her own self-consciousness. Namely, the third meaning,'myth' in this dance work is the feminism, which is a main context that is sustaining the binary opposition between the reality and the desire. Consequently, the semiotic methodology extracts overall structure of a dance work by analysing its contents through the classification of formal factors. This semiotic analysis gives us enough possibility to comprehend dance works in detail and with width.

Vol.9 No.2

Isadora Duncan is the originator of modern dancing. In terms of dancing aesthetics of these days, the artistic nature of Duncanism had inconsistency not a little, but her contri-bution to the history of dancing is great. The following three things can be said to be such achievements. First, the emancipation of body. Second, the expression motions which are natural, unlimitedly movable and liberalized. Third, her complete personality toward art which unifies concentration of her attention, her originality, her academic power, her genius and innovation. Because of these, Duncanism is the origin of modern dancing, and the study of duncanism is the pursuit of the origin which is the destination of modern dancing. In addition that, it is also the method of solving the facing tasks of modern dancing.

The prehistoric age of dance was summarized from the prehistoric age to now and concluded as following; 1. An anthropoid's dance undeveloped as animal and infant stage(expression behavior was simple impulsive motion which was not organized). Therefore, they did not know how to create art, but the important key point was that stage of expression behavior contain meaning and goal because dance itself contains meaning and goal. 2. Their dance rhythm act very enthusiasm which help to start developing in group life style wide range. An anthropoid express dance in social life, religion life, and every their life, because they only expressed their emotion through dance. 現代舞踊考察 : 草創期를 中心으로 emphasis on the beginning age

Vol.6 No.2

Being different from other arts, modern dance revolution occurred at the close of the 19th century. It is due to its speciality of physical culture. From the viewpoint of the cultural history, its time division is ambiguous, and in regard of its concept, both the modern and contemporary factors are mixed in together. Such reasons make it difficult to establish modern dance aesthetics. Isadora Duncan, the van of the revolution, denied the formal classic ballet on the ground of humanism and psychophysical monism, and she insisted on the informal liberal dance according to the waving rule of nature. Even she was liberal and unfettered, but she could not present the methodology of modern dance. So the modern dance did not become established as an independent art genre until R.V. Ladon systematized it theoretically and M. Wigman proved its propriety through the practical experimental performance on the stage. Such revolutionary success could be achieved by the pioneers who had historical understanding of the reality and progressive methodology.

Vol.18 No.1

The semiotics of Greimas, A.J gives you a hint to understand modern art by analyzing traits of sign in myth and narrative. One of them is, so called, "The interaction of semiotic constraints", which is one of "approach to Taboo" methodologies. This study analyzes format and contents of 'taboo' as a whole, which is a widely used material in Korean dance, by means of Greimas's approach. I approached to Kim's 「An Evening Game」 on the basis of Greimas's 'carre′ se′miotique theory'. As a result, binary opposites ; each verdict of the square is crossed to its opposites. It presents that conflicts between regulations (culture) and love (nature) definitely take place and that troubles among characters culminate under the surroundings. Such taboo in narrative is based on myth. Considering origins and meanings of myth, you can easily notice that taboo is a good tool for commanders to control and sustain their society. Finally, taboo comes to play a role to oppression others' authorities, which are often issued in the discussion of modern philosophy. In addition, this insight can be extended to the field of "feminism's gender theory"; theory regards female as non-commanders.
