Recently, fire extinguishing systems based on water mists have been attracting public attentions in marine engineering. Performance of the fire extinguishing systems is influenced by the size and distribution of spayed water mists. Droplet analyzing method based on image processing technique for measuring droplet size and distribution has been developed. The morphological method based on partial curvature information of pre-processed images was adopted for recognition and separation of overlapped particles. Tested results show that the present method may be reliable for the analysis of the size and distribution of droplets produced by water mist spay flow.

Tidal currents are a concentrated form of gravitational energy. Tidal current resource is significant, but limited locations. In the present study the flow fields around pitching foils have been visualized by using a Schlieren method with a high speed camera in a wind tunnel at low Reynolds number regions. It has been observed that small vortices are shed discretely from the leading and trailing edge and that they stand in line on the integrated streakline of separation shear layer. By counting vortices in the VTR frames it was clarified that the number of vortex shedding from the leading and trailing edge during one pitching cycle strongly depends on the non-dimensional pitching rate.

Energy is essential to guarantee human's comfortable life, most of the primary energies presently, rely on fossil fuel energy resources. However, with the worldwide trend of controlling the utilization fossil fuels inducing global climate change, many efforts will have to be made on securing stable supply of the energy due to UNFCCC. The objective of study is therefore to introduce harnessing techniques of tidal current energy and to examine the various hydro turbines for alternative and clean ocean energy.
