These studies were attempted to investigate the preventive effects of Rheum undulatum extracts (water and methanol) and glutathione on the liver damage induced by C Cl_4 in rats. S-GOT, S-GPT activities, liver TBA values and histological observation were evaluated. The results were as follows; 1. The individual administrations, glutathione (100,200,400mg/kg) Rheum undulatum water extract (100,200,400mg/kg) Rheum undulatum methanol extract (100,200,400mg/kg) were significantly decrased as compared with those of the control intoxicated by CCl_4. 2. Rheum undulatum water extract was more effective than methanol extract in S-GOT and S-GPT activities, and TBA values in all experimental groups. 3. The concurrent administration of Rheum undulatum extracts (water and methanol) and glutathione (100+100mg/kg, 200+100mg/kg, 400+100mg/kg) were more effective than the individual administration respectively. 4. The liver TBA values of Rheum undulatum extracts (water and methanol) and their concurrent administration with glutathione (100+100, 200+100, 400+100mg/kg) were significantly reduced respectively. 5. Although hepatic cellular necrosis and fatty acid deposit were remarkably increased by CCl_4 intoxication, the individual administration of Rheum undulatum extracts (water and methanol) and their concurrent administration of R. undulatum extracts (water and methanol) and glutathione (100+100, 200+100, 400+100mg/kg) reduced the pathological changes of parencymatous cell necrosis and fatty changes around centrilobular area of the control. In view of the above findings it can be considered that the concurrent administrations of Rheum undulatum extracts (water and methanol) and glutathione would imporve liver damages and diseases.
