Optimisation of nozzle hole configuration has been done using a 4-valve single cylinder Diesel engine equipped with electronic unit injector. Several nozzles with different nozzle hole area and cone angle have been tested. Smaller hole area resulted in lower PM and NOx emissions due to the higher injection pressure and lower injection rate, but BSF.C increased due to the longer injection duration. It was found that NOx emissions were proportional to the average temperature of the combustion gas, which is governed by heat release rate. Target point of fuel spray tip varies with combustion chamber geometry as well as nozzle cone angle and injection timing. A series of experiments showed that there existed an optimum range of target point, which produced least smoke emission. A simple spray targeting model was suggested in order to predict the smoke emission behavior against spray angle and injection timing.<br/>
