Surgery for thyroid disease is becoming much more common, but in some specialized institutions, ENT surgeons have difficulty obtaining experience of parathyroid surgery. Parathyroid disease can be divided into parathyroid adenoma with hyperparathyroidism and secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic kidney disease. Parathyroid adenoma with hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia and usually presents as nonspecific symptoms, such as, general weakness, osteoporosis, gastrointestinal disorder, kidney stones, and/or neurological symptoms, and thus, diagnosis is often delayed. Patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic kidney disease require parathyroidectomy 10 years after the onset of dialysis in 6-10% of cases even when continuously treated in a nephrology department. Here, the authors share their experiences of parathyroid surgery.

Plexiform schwannoma is a rare benign tumor originated from Schwann cell with low probabilities of becoming malignant. While it has a multi-nodular character compared to the original form, its nature can be confirmed by immunohistochemical studies such as S-100 protein stain. It is rare in the nasal cavity and therefore not many cases were reported in Korea. The authors present a case of plexiform schwannoma on the nasal vestibule with a size of 2 cm.

Ranula refers to mucous retention cyst or mucocele that develops on the oral floor and it appears most frequently among oral masses derived from salivary glands. Ranula that is extended into submandibular space or into other cervical spaces due to defective mylohyoid muscle is particularly called plunging ranula. Various types of treatments have been conducted for ranula: surgical treatments such as simple excision, marsupialization, and removal of sublingual gland; and sclerotherapy utilizing OK-432 (Picibanil) are being reported. We performed concurrent excision of ranula and sublingual gland through intraoral approach. This technique leaves no post-surgical scars and shows very low recurrence rate and incidence rate of complications. Therefore, in this study, we would like to analyze the treatment methods and results of our patients.

Background and Objectives Tinnitus, a common complaint of workers who are exposedto noise, can cause substantial negative effects on the quality of life of these workers. The aimof this study was to analyze the characteristics of tinnitus in patients with noise-induced hearingloss and the relationship between tinnitus and the duration of noise exposure. Subjects and Method Thirty-three patients with subjective tinnitus and noise-induced hearingloss were included in this study. Tinnitus questionnaire, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI)and audiological examinations were investigated according to the duration of noise exposure. Results There was a significant correlation between the tinnitus loudness and the durationof noise exposure. Patients who had longer periods of noise exposure had a louder tinnitus andhigher THI score. However, there is no significant correlation between the characteristics oftinnitus and aging process. Conclusion The duration of noise exposure influences the loudness and distress of tinnitus. An awareness of tinnitus should be considered as part of hearing conservation program.
Temperature-difference Flow Sensor Using Multiple Fiber Bragg Gratings

Multiple fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have been proposed and demonstrated for gas-flow measurements in a flow channel, using the temperature-difference method. This sensor consists of two FBG temperature sensors and two coil heaters. Coil heaters are used to heat the FBGs. The flow rate of the gas can be obtained by monitoring the difference in the Bragg-wavelength shifts of the two FBGs, which has features that exclude the effect of temperature fluctuations. In this study, experiments are conducted to measure the wavelength shift based on the flow rate, and to evaluate the gas-flow rate in a gas tube. Experimental results show that the sensor has a linear characteristic over a flow-rate range from 0 to 25ℓ/min. The measured sensitivity of the sensor is 3.2 pm/(ℓ/min) at a coil current of 120 mA.
