After the opening of large hub International Airport, the number of visitors increases continuously. Also, the importance of airport security has been raised as an important issue due to the inefficient workforce planning and uncertainty of passenger security screening time. In this study, we find out inefficient factors by analyzing passenger waiting time and distribution from the database. To solve this problem, we developed a model for real time monitoring and scheduling system which includes airport security manpower planning using simulation tools.

This paper considers the problem of determining an airport security manpower planning. Since the importance of airport security screening has been raised up due to 9.11 terrorist attacks, the role of airport officer becomes more important than ever. To achieve the airport safety, generating an optimal manpower planning is necessary. Previous methods in manpower planning researches usually have focused on the labor cost minimization approach. However, cost minimization might not be the goal of airport in the perspective of service operation. Instead, the objective of this paper is to serve as many as passengers possible while keeping the required safety levels. Thus, this research first uses M/M/s queuing model to determine the number of needed security checkpoints considering customers` waiting time. Then, integer programming model generates an optimal schedule for airport security officers. To test an efficiency of proposed model, a case study is presented with real data. The result verifies the effectiveness of proposed model and recommends future research guideline at the end.
